Key Information
Day 1
Kathmandu awaits
Check into your hotel in Thamel, the heart of the sensory overload that is Kathmandu. After meeting your guides and making any last-minute plans for the trek, finish the day with a group dinner alongside the rest of your team.
Day 2
The road to Pokhara
Driving
Drive to the lakeside city of Pokhara (approximately eight hours away) – the gateway to your trek. After road-tripping through some mind-bendingly beautiful Himalayan scenery and terraced farmland, settle into your hotel and soak in the tranquillity as you prepare for your first full day of hiking in the morning.
Day 3
The trek begins
Hiking
Take a short scenic drive (about two hours) to Nayapul and set off from the trailhead, taking your first steps along the path that gradually ascends through dense forest, passing remote waterfalls and villages along the way. Tuck into lunch with an epic view of Mount Machapuchare (6993m), then cross a suspension bridge and begin the long, steep climb up a stone staircase all the way to Ulleri. This will be one of the most challenging stretches of the whole trek, but your guide will help with the pace so that it's manageable for your group. Once at the village, refuel with a well-deserved hot meal and enjoy your first night in a Nepalese teahouse.
Day 4
Ulleri to Ghorepani
Hiking
Enjoy a morning coffee as you soak up the panoramic view from your teahouse and prepare for a moderate uphill trail through a mixed forest of oak and rhododendron. If you're travelling in the early spring, the area will be covered in colourful flowers – a true spectacle of nature. Camera ready, head straight up the nearby mountain, catching glimpses of Hiunchuli (6441m) and Annapurna South (7219m). After another lunch with world-class views, continue on to Ghorepani, home to the Magar people, in time for a special sunset over the Himalayas.
Day 5
Ghorepani to Chuile
Hiking
Set off before dawn and hike to the top of Poon Hill (3210m, about an hour's walk uphill), famous for its epic mountain views, just in time for the sunrise of a lifetime. Backtrack to Ghorepani for breakfast, then descend steeply through the rhododendron forest negotiating yet more stone steps to Deurali Pass (3210m). Cross a small stream by bridge, grab lunch surrounded by a beautiful lush forest and begin the short but steep ascent to Tadapani village – eyes peeled for Annapurna South and Machapuchare ('Fishtail' Mountain). From there it’s a slow descent to tonight’s destination, the village of Chuile.
Day 6
Chuile to Sinuwa
Hiking
Greet Machapuchare peak from your teahouse as you enjoy breakfast, then set off following the trail downhill through sparse settlements to Kimrong Khola. See the landscape change by the second as the forest thickens into untamed jungle. After following the trail downhill to Ghurjung there's a steep ascent to Chhomrong, the last permanent village in the valley. The route undulates once more as a stone staircase leads down to the river and then climbs steeply up the opposite side of the valley to tonight’s destination, Sinuwa, overlooking again the beautiful Machapuchare.
Day 7
Sinuwa to Himalaya
Hiking
Descend via stone steps through dense jungle and follow an undulating trail along the banks of a wild river as it weaves its way through some of the most challenging terrain on the entire trek, until you reach the village of Bamboo. The mountaintop views make all the hard work worthwhile. After resting up, continue through the forest to tonight's stop – the perfectly named village of Himalaya.
Day 8
Machapuchare Base Camp
Hiking
Start the day with a steep ascent through oak and bamboo forest to Hinku Cave, then push onwards and upwards on a rocky trail crossing some steep ravines as well as a few small streams on wooden bridges. As the trail reaches Deurali, negotiate the glacial river bank and ascend through birch forest, flanked by multiple layers of snowy and sharp ridges on both sides. Finally, emerge above the tree line and over the mountaintop to Machapuchare Base Camp. Try not to lose the power of speech as you look out on some of the most spectacular vistas on the entire trail, including Hiunchuli, Gandharyachuil, Gangapurna and the awesome Annapurna Massif. Relax, recover and then enjoy a Himalayan night sky filled with stars.
Day 9
Annapurna Base Camp
Hiking
Enjoy breakfast with magnificent views of surrounding mountains, then leave the greenery behind and head into the snow-blanketed and rocky landscape that lays above. Though the trail ascends gradually and does not steepen, you may feel the effect of altitude on your breathing and pace. Hike the final stretch to Annapurna Base Camp (4130m) – the summit of the entire trek and a major reason why this is one of the most famous treks on the planet. If the weather is clear, enjoy a magical sunset you'll remember for a lifetime.
Day 10
Annapurna Base Camp to Bamboo
Hiking
Rise early to glimpse the breathtaking view of giant peaks such as Annapurna I, Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Annapurna South, Gangapurna, Hiunchuli and Machapuchare as they emerge at the glow of sunrise. Then get back on the trail, this time heading downhill, soaking in the 360-degree mountain views before dropping back down to the forested slopes with a long descent to the village of Bamboo for the night.
Day 11
Last night in the mountains
Hiking
Climb to Khuldighar on stone staircases and follow the gentle downhill trail and stone steps that lead to Chomrong Khola. From there, it's a short uphill walk through the village, followed by a downhill section to Jhinu Danda. From there, you'll head to the bubbling hot springs at Jhinu Danda for some much-needed downtime.
Day 12
Return to Pokhara
Hiking
Begin your last day of trekking with some mesmerising views of the mid-hills of Nepal. Breathe in that mountain air, take some final photos and then enjoy your final descent into Naya Pul, from where you’ll be driven back to Pokhara. Head out for a celebratory dinner with your crew, then spend the rest of the night relaxing, partying beside the lake, sleeping – whatever you want, you’ve earned it!
Day 13
Back to Kathmandu
Driving
Take a bus through the Himalayas (approximately eight hours) back to Kathmandu and your hotel in Thamel. Enjoy some downtime in Nepal’s chaotic but intoxicating capital.
Day 14
Last chance to enjoy Nepal
Enjoy a lie-in followed by breakfast at your hotel, then spend your last day exploring the city before returning to the airport and back to reality.

What is the food like?
Breakfast is usually hot porridge, muesli or Tibetan bread served with an omelette or boiled eggs.
The dinner menus in the teahouses are very similar at every stop and there will usually be a choice of traditional Nepalese dhal bhat (a mixed plate of lentils, rice, vegetables and pickles – delicious and healthy), momos (Nepalese dumplings), mixed noodles, pasta and even pizza. Although meat is available at some teahouses, we suggest that you ask your guide for their advice regarding its consumption, as it tends to depend on how far it has travelled as to whether or not it is a safe option.
Dairy-free, vegan or vegetarian diets can be catered for while trekking, although meals may get a bit repetitive – dhal bhat will likely be your go-to staple. Gluten-free/coeliac diets are tricky to cater for on teahouse treks (beware that powdered soups and seasonings used often contain gluten, and cooking oil is commonly reused and may cause cross-contamination). Please explain your dietary requirements to your guide so that they can assist when ordering, and bringing along some extra food/snacks is advisable.
What is the accommodation like?
Kathmandu
You’ll stay in a hotel in Thamel close to the main shopping area and heritage sites. Expect a twin-share ensuite room, with air-con and WiFi included.
On the trail
You’ll be staying in teahouses – mountain lodges with a communal dining area and basic toilets, which are usually sorted by gender. WiFi, phone charging and hot showers are often available for a small cost. On some nights, the rooms will be multi-share.
Pokhara
You'll stay in a hotel near the lake on a twin-share basis, close to local bars and restaurants.
Upgrades
For solo travellers looking for their own space, an optional private room can be booked – see Optional Extras. This only applies to the nights spent in hotels, and is subject to availability. Please request this at the time of booking.
This trip has been rated as Moderate
The Annapurna Sanctuary is the ideal trek for those who are keen to experience the Himalayas but aren’t quite ready for the longer, higher altitude treks such as Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit. Ideally you should have some experience of trekking but the trip is designed with plenty of time factored in to rest up and enjoy the incredible views. Although the trek is graded as moderate, don't underestimate the effort it takes to complete. There are a lot of stone staircases on this route as well as some longer days and steep steady climbs, so you may want to think twice if you suffer from bad knees.
This is one of the best routes in Nepal for acclimatisation as the ascent rate is well-paced. Still, it is important to note that trekking at altitudes above 3000m/10,000ft is more demanding on the body than walking at low elevations. Your guide will set the pace and as with all altitude treks, the theme is ‘slowly slowly’ to help you adjust to the altitude. A good level of fitness and stamina will make the going more enjoyable, so consider factoring in some training beforehand – we advise doing at least a couple of weekends of back-to-back days walking.
What will I need to carry?
This trip includes one porter for every two trekkers. They will carry up to 20-25kg of kit so your overnight bags and spare clothes will be transported for you (maximum 12kg per person). You will only need to carry a daypack with essentials in (extra layer, snacks, water, suncream, camera etc).
The main trekking season in Nepal is from September to May (before or after the monsoon). The trekking season can be split into three seasons:
Winter (Dec-Feb): Despite being seen as ‘off-season’ this is often the best time to trek in Nepal. The nights can be very cold (down to at least -10ºC/14F) at Annapurna Base Camp but the trails are quieter and the mountain views are often at their best due to the crisp dry air and clear sunny skies.
Pre-Monsoon/Spring (Mar-May): Spring (particularly April and May) is the mildest time to trek in Nepal and magnificent rhododendron forests bloom along the Annapurna Sanctuary route at this time of year. It will be hot in the lowlands (30ºC/86F) but more comfortable as you gain elevation. Rain is not uncommon and snow cover is likely at Base Camp. Night-time temperatures should remain above freezing for the most part but can still drop below zero at Base Camp.
Post-Monsoon/Autumn (Sep-Nov): The rains can sometimes persist into September but in general this time of year is characterised by sunny, relatively mild days and clear skies. It can get cold and windy at higher altitudes and nights can be cold (typically -5ºC/23F) at the high points.
Of course, mountain weather is notoriously hard to predict and snow and extremes of temperature can be expected on any trip so come prepared.
Unbelievable adventure
The most incredible trek with one million pinch me moments; Tejshree and Resham were the best guides I could have ever hoped for (we even had other groups that we met along the way saying they wish they had them as their guides) and our group of strangers ended the trip as a group of lovely friends. I feel so lucky to have been guided by such an incredible woman; she was so good at providing us with all the information we needed, as well as so much laughter and fun for us all! I was unfortunate enough to get ill one day of the trek also, but Resham and one of the supporters called Surya stayed with me while I couldn’t reach the main group that night and helped look after me which was appreciated so much. Resham set such a good pace for the group and always kept us entertained, I’ve never met someone with such a passion for the card game Dumbal before either haha, the time spent playing cards with him and Tejshree at ABC is something I’ll never forget!
The trek itself was definitely demanding at times, but achievable with so much reward for your hard work. There was some serious breathtaking moments and the lovely teahouses and lovely company just added so much to the experience.
Trip of a lifetime
The Annapurna Sanctuary trek was amazing and we loved it. The views were breath-taking – from the forests, rivers and waterfalls to the mountain ranges and the gorgeous sunrises that were standout moments.
We had three fantastic guides from Freedom Adventures - Sanjeet, Anil and Tej – they were so knowledgeable, kind and helpful - and funny too. After I injured my knee I thought I might not be able to continue but with their expert planning and experience, they put plans in place that ensured we were able to finish the trip – I can’t thank them enough for that. We were also lucky enough to have a great group of people to trek with and there was a lot of fun and laughter along the way.
One thing to mention is that there are thousands of steps! The majority of the trek is steps up or down so if you do have difficulty with your knees then take strong knee supports and walking poles – these make all the difference. It’s a well-paced walk so although it’s challenging it’s still very enjoyable.
The food was good, filling and we never felt hungry. We had well timed food and drink breaks along the route each day and places to buy snacks and drinks.
The Tea Houses are basic but comfortable. We went in late September/early October and we used the quilts in the tea houses with a sleeping bag liner and pillow case rather than carrying a sleeping bag and this worked well.
If you get chance to visit the hot springs then we’d recommend it as it felt so good on aching joints.
If you can, have some time in Kathmandu as it’s a fantastic place to visit. It’s a lively city with lots to see and not to be missed. Pokhara is lovely too but on a smaller scale and has a beautiful lake to take trips on, with plenty of good restaurants and bars to visit. The hotels in both places were lovely.
We can’t recommend this trek enough! It’s the trip of a lifetime.
Unforgettable journey through nepal
I recently returned from an unforgettable journey through Nepal, and my Himalayan trek exceeded my wildest dreams! The breathtaking natural beauty of the route (see attached photos) was only matched by the exceptional team that supported me every step of the way.
My outstanding guide, Kanchan Yonjan, and assistants Santosh and Resham, expertly balanced pace, logistics, and briefings to ensure our group's comfort and preparedness. Their warm camaraderie, shared laughter, and insightful stories about local history and geology made the experience truly special. They even taught us traditional Nepali dances!
Our talented porters, Urram, Surya, Ashish, Nara, Sameer, and Suresh, worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure our seamless journey.
For those planning a similar adventure, here are my top tips:
- Rise early for Poon Hill's breathtaking sunrise
- Indulge in ginger honey lemon tea
- Savor every dal bhat
- Unwind in the hot springs on the penultimate day
I highly recommend this experience and hope to reunite with Kanchan, Santosh, Resham, and the entire team on future adventures.
Wonderful, Wonderful experience.
We loved this trip, from start to finish, it was truly and trip of a lifetime. Here is some more info that may be helpful:
The trekking experience in Annapurna: Includes rainforest, jungle and of course mountains. Beautiful diverse, and breath-taking.
Difficulty: There are lots of steps!! My partner and I are in our fifties and reasonably fit. We were challenged some days but felt the challenge was just right to be rewarding rather than completely exhausting.
The guides: Kanchan, Resham and Santosh were so lovely, so accommodating, kind and encouraging. If we could of taken them back home with us we would of! Lovely, humble people.
Group: There were 12 in a our group, and wow, I underestimated how much the group dynamic brings to the experience. It hugely enriched the overall experience.
Food: A good range of dishes, very filling and tasty. And not expensive. We kept to vegetarian options while on the trek itself.
Nepal: Kathmandu is crazy busy, and wonderful, the accommodation is very nice. Pokhara is a quieter place by the lake, very beautiful. again the accommodation is very good.
Altitude sickness: None of the group were affected.
Overall value for money: Absolutely, I'd go again in a heartbeat.
Interaction with the operators: Very good, before the trip in helping prepare and during when/if needed.
Misc: We decided to fly from Kathmandu to Pokhara rather than endure the bus. Some group members took the bus others like us flew. Based on all feedback I would recommend flying. The flight was 25 minutes, compared to a very bumpy 10 hours on the bus. The time saved allows nearly an extra day in Pokhara on the way and in Kathmandu on the way back.
Amazing trip with a great group of people
I can't speak highly enough of this Annapurna sanctuary trek and the people involved in organising it! The scenery was spectacular and the tea houses along the way really comfortable and welcoming. Our guide Tejshree was so attentive throughout and made sure that we had the best experience possible, including receiving a tika and blessing as part of the Dashain festival. Our assistant guide Resham and support staff Prem, Aashis and Surya were always smiling, despite having to carry our heavy bags, and we had a lot of fun playing cards with them in the evenings. Highlights for me include watching the sunrise on Poon hill, being blown away by the views at Annapurna base camp and relaxing in the hot springs at the end. It really was an experience of a lifetime.
Great Trip
An incredible trip. So well organised, always felt safe and well looked after by the wonderful guides Kanchan, Santosh and Resan. The views from base camp were amazing and tea houses very comfortable with extra blankets whenever needed. The trek was done at a good pace with plenty of tea breaks and enough time to adjust to the altitude. Would highly reccomend this trip!
INCREDIBLE TREK, INCREDIBLE TEAM
We booked the trip keen to do some walking in the Himalayas but what we ended up with was the trip of a life time. The natural beauty of the route is hard to describe so I will attach some pics. What the pics cannot show you however is the amazing team that make it all run like clock work. Our fearless leader, Kanchan and his two assistants, Santosh and Resham were epic. They worked hard to make sure the pace was right whilst walking, food was arriving on time and briefing so we knew what the next day would hold. Above and beyond what guides should do they also made us laugh and educated us. We danced with them and we learnt about the tectonic plates on which we stood and the history of the religions that surrounded us. They are an epic team and we were lucky to have them. We both want to do another trek in the future and hope to get these guys again. Definitely get up early to go see sunrise on Poon Hill, drink as much ginger honey lemon tea as you can, eat all the dal bhat going and enjoy a dip in the hot springs on the penultimate day. Couldn't recommend any higher
Excellent
We did the hike to Annapurna Base Camp and it was incredible. Our guide Kanchan Yonjan, and the assistant guides Resham and Santosh, were outstanding. They were informative, attentive, and entertaining. One highlight of the trip for me was the incredible views from Annapurna Base Camp. Another was celebrating the Tihar festival with our guides and porters at one of the tea houses on the trail. This festival coincided with our trip, and our guide Kanchan went above and beyond to arrange for us to feel included in it. I would highly recommend Freedom Adventures and the Annapurna Base Camp trek. (Thanks too to our porters for carrying our heavy bags on the trek! We greatly enjoyed celebrating Tihar and the completion of the trek with you!)
Himalayan dreams
I arranged this trek with my partner to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. It lived up to our hopes, giving us a once-in-a-lifetime experience literally on top of the world, and a sense of shared achievement and adventure.
Our lead guide Kanchan, and his assistant guides Resam and Santos were experienced, funny and very knowledgeable. They were also incredibly kind and very supportive of members of the group that found it more difficult. They made extra efforts to include us in the celebration of the Tihar festival, with dance, flowers and singing which was a real highlight.
I would strongly recommend this trip for others looking to push their boundaries and broaden their minds while also having fun and feeling safe.
Bucket list trekking in Nepal - Incredible!
An amazing, unforgettable experience trekking the Annapurna sanctuary route in Nepal. Simply incredible. The trek is a great test in mental and physical stamina but the rewards are phenomenal: Jaw dropping vistas, beautiful flowered gardens, towering mountains, waterfalls and much much more. Kanchan Yonjan led the team of guides and was a pleasure to be around, discussing religion, history, geography whilst smiling and often dancing! His assistants Santosh and Resham were always on hand to make sure everyone was ok and worked seemingly every hour of the day to ensure we were fed and taken care of at each tea house we stayed. The team of porters worked heroically to ensure our supplies made it to each new destination before us. Thanks to Ashish, Suresh, Surya, Sameer, Nara, Uttam for their massive efforts to make this trip so memorable. Highly recommended, take this once in a lifetime trip and you won’t be disappointed!
A memory for a lifetime
In a few words: joy, magic, breathtaking, laugh, moments of physical & emotional intensity with lovely caring people and 3 super guides ! Very well organized trek: safe in terms of intensity, moderate difficulty. I was worried about the potential altitude symptoms, but it's manageable for anyone in a good health and if you take it slowly, there are many breaks planned. Before the trek, I also didn't understand why the food was not included and I was worried about having enough money with me, my budget was not totally clear in my mind and I always needed to be careful about my money. But in the end it was easy: the guide organized everything smoothly, I just had to take approximately 500€ in Nepalese roupies (food, showers, tips, some souvenirs), maybe a little more if you want WiFi, chargers and more souvenirs. The accomodations are good. If you don't want to take everything from home, there are many trekking shops in Pokhara. Thanks everyone for everything!
Amazing trip with brilliant views and even more brilliant people!
Had such an amazing time on this trip! Our lead guide Krishna and support guides Ujjwal and Manju did a fantastic job of making sure we were all happy and felt safe during the trek. Krishna also arranged a birthday cake to be delivered to one of our tea houses which was so special! The views and food were so amazing every day - I would highly recommend this trip! All of the porters made our time so easy with carrying our overnight bags and it was lovely to spend some evenings playing cards with all of the support team!
Great group, great guides, epic
Great group, great guides, epic landscapes! A brilliant 2 weeks. A super well organised trip. The guide team did a great job of facilitating any trips/travel in addition to the original itinerary such as tours of Kathmandu etc.
Incredible trek with incredible people
The ABC trek truly exceeded all my expectations. The meticulous planning from all three of our Freedom Adventures guides Krishna, Manju and Ujjwal was second to none. They made every part of the trek a seamless and enjoyable experience, at no point did it feel like anything was lacking. Also a huge thank you to our incredible porters Saurau, Jeevan, Bhuwan, Dipak, Mureli and Pritam. Their amazing work was truly one of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen.
As for the trip itself, I was blown away by the whole experience. The teahouses were fantastic, charming places to stay. All were very accommodating and comfortable which made it very easy to get a good nights sleep (definitely bring good ear plugs and eye mask!!). All far exceeded my expectations. The food was simply amazing, daal bhat is a Nepalese staple that kept our energy high always. But all the teahouses had amazing variety on the menu so you’re quite frankly spoilt for choice. Having a pizza at ABC was not what I expected at the start but was an amazing surprise! The scenery is the best in the world, period. Nothing comes close. There was great variety in the terrain, with some days traversing jungled areas to others (closer to ABC) getting above the treeline for the most incredible views you’ve ever seen. The weather was perfect, as was our group. Both of these combined made the trip truly unforgettable.
All in all the whole thing is an 11/10 experience that you will not regret booking. Memories and friends for a lifetime.
A few top tips:
- Bring good ear plugs and an eye mask!
- Bring a small face towel for sweat.
- Ideally arrive 2 days before departing to Pokhara (annual leave permitting). Gives you an extra day to rest and prepare for the adventure ahead. Plus an extra day to explore Kathmandu, which is an amazing city.
- Pack for cold weather as well as 30C heat. Shorts are a must!
Thanks again all!!!!!!
Excellent trek and introduction to Nepal!
Before booking this adventure I wanted an experience that would be challenging, fun, and comfortable. The MBA and team answered all my questions and followed up when new information was required. Everything was taken care of by our guides: Krishna, Ujjwal, and Manju. We had amazing weather(especially in the morning) which allowed great views and pictures along the whole trip. I felt that everyday was thoroughly planned out, building our anticipation of reaching Annapurna Base Camp(ABC). In particular Poon Hill and our free time to explore once at ABC stood out as highlights. In one instance, the roads were blocked due to late season heavy rain and they booked a domestic flight without an extra charge! Our accommodations definitely exceeded my expectations, with excellent food and rooms to relax in after a long day trekking. Trekking was tough but doable which is exactly what I was hoping for. The Sky Inn and Big Pillow Inn were great hotels, before and after the trek in Kathmandu and Pokhara. Our guides, porters, and fellow group members really made the whole trip so much better than just the trek. I would recommend MBA and this trip in particular to anyone looking for a life-changing experience. Thankyou!
Incredible trek made possible by incredible people!
The views along the whole route are amazing, paired with great food, a great group of people and great hospitality. This really is a once in a lifetime trek and well worth the money!
Our guide Krishna, and assistant guides Ujjwal and Manju made everything so easy, even organising a birthday cake on the way back for one of us! Krishna was very professional but great fun, he was very good at putting us all at ease with the effects of altitude and looking out for us. The porters were also good fun and made the trek a lot more comfortable, playing cards with us on a few of the evenings.
The tea houses were better than I expected, with incredible views, terraces and a great range of food available. I'm now obsessed with LGH tea..
I would highly recommend this trek! Particularly if you love landscape photography!
Inspiring awesome trip!
The Sanctuary route was a fair challenging trek - 80% of the 10 day walk was steps up or down so those with dodgy knees be mindful! Our guides Sanjeet, Anil and Tess from Freedom Adventures were incredible - thoughtful expert crew who took care of the group - scenery stunning, Kathmandu a most bonkers lovely vibrant city - highly recommend - MBA have sourced a great Nepalese company to guide you in the Himalayas and I'm definitely going back to have a go at other treks - autumn weather rather hot so if going early in the season take cooler clothing and we didn't need a 4 season sleeping bag that takes more room up - a smaller 3 season good enough and teahouses supply blankets but take a pillowcase for sure and trekking poles that saved my legs! Trekking through forrests and the mountain ranges really was breathtaking - food good and all group healthy no issues getting safe water from places if didn't have a filter system
ABC trek October 2024
Absolutely incredible experience. Everything was taken care of by our guides Krishna, Manju and Ujjwal who set a good pace for the hike, sorted everything we needed and answered any and all questions we had. The team of porters were absolutely superhuman! Without their hard work the trip wouldn’t be possible. The schedule was great and each day had such different landscapes that it’s impossible to get bored. The pacing was good with plenty of breaks but be prepared for many many stone stairs going up and down! The food was amazing, Dahl baht was the staple choice but every tea house had lots of options. The whole trip really exceeded all expectations. I would highly recommend this trip and MBA in general!
The incredible Annapurna Sanctuary Route
Such an incredible experience, it exceeded all expectations. It was a tough at times, the stone stairs were a real challenge so you do need a good level of fitness & determination. The views were totally amazing and made it all worthwhile. Tea Houses are at times basic but always charming, I was very happy with the food, dal bhat was always great and had more choices than I expected. The support, knowledge & care from our guide Krishna and his team Manju& Ujjwal was amazing. They looked out for each of us and gave us the support we needed, nothing was ever too much. They worked really well as a team and made it doable & fun. We had a very lovely supportive group & all got on so well. The porters were incredible & were very much part of the team. I would definitely recommend this trek & the A team that took such care & gave us so many laughs along the way!
Incredible trek threw the mountains
This hike was a truly once in a lifetime experience. I was concerned that the weather was going to be very wet for our hike, however we were lucky to experience clear morning and atmospheric afternoons in the night mountains.
Krishna, our trek leader was great. His knowledge, experience of the mountains, and sense of humour kept the team on track and motivated throughout.
Both Manju and Ujjwal were great at supporting the team, providing insights to the culture and history of the mountain communities, as well as motivating the team and taking ends orders of ginger tea at the end of the day.
I cannot recommend this hike enough as the schedule was perfect and the views are stunning.
Finally, a big shout out to the team of porters. Without their support the trip would not be possible; Saurau, Jeevan, Bhuwan, Dipak, Mureli, Pritam.
Thank you so much team
The most incredible trek!
Wow, where to start with this incredible trip. Amazing group of new friends, lucky enough to have the most wonderful guides - Krishna, Ujjwal and Manju and our incredible porters. From start to finish the trip is smooth and you are taken care of at every stage. The trek is hard - to be honest harder than I was expecting, just a lot of steep days and intense ups and downs. As Krishna said - no stairs, no Himalayas which is very true. Nothing felt unmanageable though and the views and vibes were unmatched. I wish I never had to leave and we are already planning our next adventure. I would recommend 100x over!
Trip of a lifetime!
This was such an incredible trip, I cannot recommend it highly enough! Quite physically challenging due to the large amount of steep stone steps, but it was very well paced which made it totally manageable. The scale and scenery is like nothing I’ve ever seen, it was truly mind blowing and was so spectacular it almost looked unreal.
Our local team (Sanjeet, Anil and Tez) were beyond brilliant - highly experienced and professional, organised, patient and kind but also fun and funny, there were a lots of laughs along the way. They couldn’t do enough for us, and I felt in such safe hands.
If you are thinking of doing this trip, just do it - my problem now is finding another trip to match it, I’m not sure if it’s possible!
Extraordinary trip!
My trip with MBA and Freedom Adventures was extraordinary! I loved getting to know our entire group including our wonderful guide, assistant guides, porters, and fellow travelers. The trip was well organized and took us through some of the most amazing scenery I've ever been exposed to. Highly recommend.
Absolutely loved every second
Where to start? The trip was well organised. The friendliness and professionalism from our lead and assistant guides (Sanjeet, Anil and Tej) and porters was absolutely outstanding. Another review said all you need to do is put one foot in front of another and everything else is taken care of, and this is completely true.
The views are spectacular, though be aware that (1) you’ll be walking through forest with only teasers of “real” mountains until day 5 / 6 of the hike and, (2) there are a lot of stairs (I should’ve read the itinerary in more detail).
This trip truly was everything I hoped it would be; from the sheer drama of the Himalayas, to the most amazing group of people who were part of the trek, to the kindness of the locals. I will absolutely book another trip to Nepal with MBA.
ABC May 2024
Just returned from ABC - Annapurna Sanctuary Route.
A really great experience and a big shout out to Tika our guide and the porters who without the trip would have not been possible. They really went the extra mile so really big thanks to them.
The scenery is amazing in the clear days the views were amazing.
The tea houses were pleasant and Tike and the team always planned ahead so we stayed and ate in the best places. The food was great but kind of repetitive.
One thing I would say which I think other reviews have pointed out but the distances walked seemed to be more than what’s advertised - and also there is a lot of stairs - however it was still manageable just with the heat I did struggle for the first few days however once you get past day 4 I feel like things got easier.
Once in a lifetime trip
Once in a lifetime trip - it was incredible! The views of the forest's with the amazing rhododendron flowers, towering waterfalls to the tall snow peaked mountains are memories that I will never forget.
Being my first multi stage trek, I could not have asked for a better group to have done this with. Ujjwal and Sebika have a such bright future as guides and I really hope the company see what amazing assets they really are. A big thank you to the 'ironmen' who always had smiles on their faces and always super polite. Also a big shout out to Ishwor who was one of the ironmen. Seeing him carry our bags to later see him run back down the trail to help one of our group members everyday was truly inspirational to see.
The hike was well paced, lots of breaks and everyday there were so many highlights. I highly recommend going in April to see the beautiful rhododendron flowers, it was just amazing walking through and being surrounded by them. The tea houses were so much better than I thought they were going to be. Yes they are basic but they are clean and I loved rocking up to find out what charm each had. The food was always super tasty from local dishes to international dishes perfect for when I craving a big bowl of pasta.
Only criticism I have for the trip is that I didn't enjoy the morning of last day (day 12). It was called a sanctuary route and it felt far from that. We all had an amazing time leaving the last teahouse and crossing the last bridge but from there onwards, we were walking down a dirt track where cars and buses were passing leaving huge clouds of dust. Not sure whether the company is trying to save money by making us walk down to then be picked up, but I think it needs rethinking as it was disappointing to finish an incredible trip like that. Personally I would have preferred a longer breakfast to enjoy those snow peaked mountains and more time in Pokhara.
Overall I would highly recommend the trip, you won't regret it!
Annapurna Sanctuary Route
This was a wonderful route. The daily distances were very manageable but we walked through such varied scenery and conditions as we gradually ascended into the high mountains. We were lucky to have perfect visibility for spectacular views from the Poon Hill viewpoint, and at the Annapurna Base Camp itself.
Our guide and porters were exceptional - we felt in very safe hands, and were so well looked after.
Memories for a lifetime
What an incredible trip and no better way to start this review with the the amazing team of guides that look after you. The guides are everything - they guide you on the route, set manageable pace, assist and solve any problems/injuries, translate with the locals, fill your water bottles, take your food orders, serve the food and clear the tables after. They are an integral part on making this tour a success and we were lucky enough to have Sunil, Sibeka and Ujjwal who was absolutely amazing and made this trip a lifetime memory. They were always happy to help and I believe you could do any trip with them and it would be amazing... and this is what Much Better Adventures has done incredibly well - picked the right people to ensure a safe and memorable trip.
I found the ever changing landscapes beautiful and well worth all the steps. We were lucky enough to go at mid April when the rhododendrons we in full bloom making the jungle that much more beautiful. Once through the jungle you are greeted by the steep mountains filled with waterfalls before making a push to the base camps. The accommodation is basic but comfortable and the food is also one of the many highlights. Overall the trip is very well organised and you are made to feel comfortable (even on the difficult days).
A few tips from my experience:
- I recommend a 2l hydration pack - it makes drinking water frequently easy.
- Stay vegetarian - the food is delicious and we had no problem with our stomachs. We also did the water purification tablets which worked well for us.
- Layers are very important - the temperatures are very different (the beginning of the hike was 25 degrees and Basecamp was zero and even colder in the early mornings)
- take card games - you have some downtime to kill in tea houses and it's a great way to bond with your group and guides.
We had a wonderful time
We had a wonderful time on this trek - the scenery was beautiful, with amazing views of the Himalaya. Whilst the weather was very hazy for the first few days, once we got to Annapurna Base Camp, it was beautifully clear. I was very glad to have packed warm clothes and thermals, as the tea houses are unheated, so nights are extremely cold once you get high up! Our guide, Tika, did an excellent job of organising accommodation and meals, making sure we had everything we needed, and setting a good pace for the climbs. We always felt safe and all the organisation was taken care of for us, which was very relaxing! Our porters, Kim and Purna, were fantastic too.
An excellent trip with an
An excellent trip with an excellent Guide - Tika - along with Purna and Kim our Porters. Tika was a very thoughtful, kind and a supportive guide who was there for us throughout the whole trip doing what he could to make it the best experience for us. He achieved that and sending him my thanks for such a lovely holiday.
If you are keen to join a group trip then it is a good idea to wait till many people have signed up before you book as the trips will run with one so sharing for anyone new to this site. Whilst only 3 of us, I was lucky to share the hike with two lovely people - so thank you to them for being such great trekking buddies! The organisation with both much better adventures and the local host in Nepal was excellent! Thank you.

Meals
We do not include meals on this trek, as from experience we know that altitude and physical exercise mean appetites vary hugely. The cost of food also rises as you ascend, because it all has to be carried in by porters and yaks – very little can be grown locally. How much you spend per day will vary according to your choice of meal, but generally people spend between $15-$25 per person per day on meals and hot drinks. Below is an approximate breakdown of some items:
- Dal baht: $4 to $7
- Chow mein: $2 to $4
- Eggs: $2 to $4
- Toast: $1.50 to $3
- Tea/hot chocolate: $1 to $3
- Chocolate bars: $2 to $4
Teahouses will provide cold water free of charge; however, it will need to be treated to enable you to drink it. Please read the drinking water FAQ for our advice.
Miscellaneous costs
Other extra costs to be considered are:
- Shower: $2-$4
- WiFi: $2-5
- Electricity: $2-5
Tips
It is customary in Nepal to tip guides and porters. Although it may not be customary to you, it is of considerable significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels. You can give any tips to your lead guide at the end of your trip. This will then be shared amongst the whole team. For full transparency, the lead guide will distribute the tips to the guides and porters in your presence. It is customary for the guides to receive a higher share than the porters as they are more highly qualified.
A good rule of thumb is around $115pp as a tip, although the amount you give is entirely your choice.
If you would like to give an additional tip to a member of the team who has supported you personally, please do so directly and discretely.
Personal Expenses
You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional meals and drinks, shopping, optional activities, and laundry.
Travel insurance
Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures and you are required to provide your policy information before departing. Your insurance should include adequate protection for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and equipment and the specific activities involved on your adventure. We also strongly recommend it includes cancellation and curtailment insurance, should you be unable to join your trip for specific reasons such as illness. Our recommended travel insurance provider is Campbell Irvine, as their insurance offers all of the above.
Owing to the nature of this trip, it is essential that your personal travel insurance policy provides cover to the maximum altitude visited on this trip (4130m) as well as for emergency medical evacuation by helicopter.
Visas
Visa requirements often change, and you are responsible for obtaining any required visas for this trip. Please check with your nearest embassy or consulate for up-to-date advice.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 482kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000miles/1609km would be approx. 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person if there was 2 of you in it).
- A return economy class flight London - New York would be approx. 1,619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approx. 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

The preferred currency is the Nepalese Rupee (NPR). Whilst ATMs are available in the main cities, please do not rely on them as they are often out of order and most have a maximum withdrawal limit equivalent to about GBP300.
It's best to bring the bulk of your money with you in cash and exchange it at a bank or at one of the many money changers in Nepal - your guide will help you with this. Most major currencies are accepted, including GBP (Sterling), Euros and US Dollars, however Scottish or Irish currency cannot be changed. Keep your exchange receipts in case you want to change any unused Rupees back into hard currency when you leave Nepal (it is illegal to export Nepalese Rupees as it is a closed currency).
You will need to carry a fairly large amount of cash while trekking for the meals. We advise that you keep this in a waterproof bag and in your day bag along with your passport.
You can leave any luggage not needed on the trek at your hotel in Kathmandu.
This trip includes one porter for every two trekkers. They will carry up to 20-25kg of kit so your overnight bags and spare clothes will be transported for you (maximum 12kg per person). You will only need to carry a daypack with essentials in (extra layer, snacks, water, suncream, camera etc).
We work with some of the best leaders in the industry, every one of which is government licensed and very experienced. In order to ensure this high standard of performance, the host provides them with top-notch in-house training that covers advanced wilderness first aid, hyperbaric chambers, oxygen system, mountain rescue, incident management and Leave No Trace (LNT) principles to help keep the Himalayas pristine.
Although we schedule departure dates outside of the main monsoon season, weather conditions in any mountain region can be unpredictable and sometimes your host will need to revert to 'Plan B'.
No two trekking seasons are the same, but occasional landslides or heavy snowfall and avalanches have been known to lead to trail closures on this route – particularly in the areas around Machapuchare Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp. If the trail is closed or deemed unsafe your host will organise an alternative trek of similar difficulty and duration – usually to Mardi Base Camp.
We’ve sourced some great optional activities for you to do in and around Kathmandu should you wish to explore the area a little bit further. Please discuss these directly with your host who will be able to book them for you.
Cook Like a Local: This short cooking workshop (approx. 3 hours) teaches you how to cook popular Nepali dishes like momos and dal bhat. You’ll meet your teacher and accompany them shopping, then head to the kitchen and learn to cook alongside them. Price: pay what you think the workshop is worth!
Shop Local: A 2-3 hour guided exploration of the markets of Kathmandu. Learn about the vendors that line the narrow and crowded alleyways and witness everything you could ever imagine being sold, haggled or bargained for. It’s a great chance to learn about the melting pot of cultures that exist in Kathmandu. Price: $9-$50pp, depending on the group size.
Master of the Arts: Patan Durbar Square is popular for its handicrafts and this trip will explore the local factories where they are produced. You’ll visit 2-3 factories and learn about the traditional processes they use and see artwork being produced. Price: $14-$59pp, depending on the group size.
Introduction to Shamanism: Shamanism, which is believed to heal many diseases, is not practiced widely these days, however this trip enables you to meet a practising Guru and learn all about this age-old tradition. You’ll visit a small house for an introduction, followed by lunch and then a drumming session where you’ll learn the importance of rhythm to healing. Price: $90-$150, depending on group size.
Yes! Lakeside Pokhara, with its laidback vibe, is a popular spot to relax after a trek. Although the tour starts and ends in Kathmandu, your host can arrange extra nights for you in Pokhara after your trek. They will simply shift your included bus transfer from Pokhara to Kathmandu and your final night's hotel reservation in Kathmandu to a later date for you, so you'll only need to pay for the additional accommodation in Pokhara.
Although most teahouses have the option to buy bottled water, we advise against it to reduce the use of plastic in the mountains (this ends up being burnt or dumped in landfill out of sight). You will instead be provided with cold water that needs treating. There are a wide range of products available these days which are more effective than traditional purification tablets - some trekkers like to use UV handheld devices such as a Steripen but other options are available - just be sure to check the performance in freezing conditions.
For current advice about travelling in Nepal, have a read of the UK Foreign Office pages here.
Whilst there are no domestic flights included in this itinerary, should you choose to add one to your booking as an additional service you should be aware of the following:
Nepal's mountainous terrain and weather make for challenging flying conditions and sadly more incidents (including fatalities) occur here than in other countries. Since 2013 the EU has banned all Nepalese domestic airlines from flying within EU airspace in order to raise awareness of the poor safety record (although no Nepalese airlines were operating routes within the EU prior to the ban). You should be aware that flying in Nepal is an identified risk: please consider this carefully before booking. Additional information can be found on the Aviation Safety Network entry for Nepal as well as the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office travel advice for Nepal
Domestic airlines in Nepal are generally not accredited by any internationally recognised safety audit systems and the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal does not operate to the same standards as those of Western nations.
What does MBA do about this?
MBA collaborates with other UK travel companies that arrange for independent air-safety auditors to visit Nepal annually to assess the local airlines. MBA then only uses the carriers that were approved as part of the most recent audit. If any concerns are subsequently raised about an approved airline between audits, we put them on hold until the auditors are satisfied that safety standards are being met.
