Key Information

Day 1

Meet your crew

View of Bergen from the water, Norway.

Wave goodbye to the office and head to Bergen, where you'll be met at the airport and transferred to your accommodation in Voss. After settling into your hostel, you can head out to grab dinner locally. If you're feeling brave, you could try a quick dip in the chilly Vangsvatnet Lake before settling in for a good night’s sleep ahead of hitting the water tomorrow.

Day 2

Kayaking the Nærøyfjord

A kayaker paddling along the Nærøyfjord in Norway.

Kayaking

4-5 hours · 12km

Grab breakfast at your hostel before hopping in the van to head to the put-in point at Gudvangen. When you arrive, your guide will get you set up with your wetsuit, kayaking boots, dry bag, waterproof camera/phone box and all of your kayaking gear. You'll have a safety briefing and an introduction to sea kayaking before heading out for your first day of unforgettable paddling down the beautiful Nærøyfjord. You'll stop off along the way for breaks and to admire the scenery, before arriving at the campsite by late afternoon. Kick back and enjoy the stunning scenery before tucking into a hot dinner and making merry around the campfire. If you're feeling up to it, there is the option of going for a short walk to get a better view of the fjord from above.

Day 3

Hike to the highlands 1000m above the fjord

Sunny view of the Aurlandsfjorden in the Norwegian Fjords.

Hiking

10-11hrs · 20.7km · 1530m up · 1530m down

Wake up in a Norwegian paradise and enjoy a leisurely breakfast before packing your bag, ready for the day's hike. Your aim is to reach the Breiskrednosi summit, which is 1189m above the Nærøyfjord and offers a spectacular view of the fjord from above. Drink in the views over the fjord from the top with your group, before heading back down to the campsite. Enjoy dinner around the campfire before another night under the stars.

Day 4

Kayak past cliff faces and waterfalls before heading home

Kayaking

4 - 5 hours · 12km

Continue kayaking north along the Nærøyfjord, exploring magnificent cliffs and remote waterfalls, keeping your eye out for seals along the way. Arrive mid-afternoon at the remote – and totally picturesque – village of Undredal, before heading to the airport in time for your flight home.

Toasting marshmallows over the campfire in the Norwegian Fjords.

The portions are more than generous, all the food is fresh and any dietary requirements can be met - just tell us your preferences when you book. Dinner and breakfast is prepared by your guide over a campfire, the menu will vary but you can expect things like rice and pasta with fresh vegetables, egg, bacon and sausages. There is also bread and sandwich filler for lunch breaks. Water, tea and coffee are also readily available as well as wine for the evenings.

What is the accommodation like?

An aerial view of a hostel on the fjord edge in Voss, Norwegian Fjords.
Voss

On your first night, you'll be staying in same-sex dorms in a simple, clean hostel in Voss. Occasionally alternative accommodation is provided in cabins at Gudvangen Camping (close to the kayaking base) or in a simple hotel in Brandseth.

View from the tent at dawn looking out over the Naeroyfjord in the Norwegian Fjords.
Fjord Edge

On the second and third night, you'll paddle to a beach and sleep in a tent under the stars. Sleeping mats and sleeping bags are provided, but you can bring your own if you prefer. There is no shower, and toilets are basic to say the least - it is wild camping after all.

Upgrades

If you'd prefer your own room in Voss, your host offers an optional upgrade to a private room at Voss Hostel or alternatively at the 4-star Park Hotel Voss (subject to availability). Park Hotel is conveniently located about 150m from the train station and right on the lakefront. Please see Optional Extras for prices - we recommend that you request this at the time of booking to avoid disappointment.

This trip has been rated as Moderate

You really do not need any kayaking experience. Your guide will give you full instructions and a safety briefing at the start. You’ll just need reasonable levels of fitness to handle approx 25km of relaxed paddling over two days, a day of hiking and be up for camping out overnight.

The hike is not for beginners and is very challenging, particularly if it is or has been wet. You'll gain over a thousand metres in elevation during the hike and early in the season (April, May and occasionally early June) there can be snow on the ground (sometimes quite deep) which adds to the challenge. The same can apply late in the season too. We would only recommend this hike if you are an active person with hiking experience. It just takes a bit of time getting up the steep section but don’t worry, it’s no race to the top.

The route is about 10km each way, making a total hike of 20.7km. The elevation is sea level to 1,189m and quite steep in places. The hike is about 8 to 11 hours return, with an awesome view from the ridge at the top to the fjord below.

What if i need to skip an activity?

There should be no problem with staying back at camp during the hiking day for someone not wanting to hike. It may also be possible to just come along for the first part of the hike and then return to the camp, this does depend on where the group is actually camped as this may affect options. Alternatively, you could consider booking the Kayak and Wild Camp Norwegian Fjords trip instead.

What will I need to carry?

For the hike, you'll only need to carry a small daypack with personal items, spare clothing layers, snacks, a packed lunch, and a water bottle. See the Kit List and FAQs for further details about packing and luggage.

The weather in summer is generally very comfortable for kayaking and camping, with temperatures of 15-20 degrees Celsius, sometimes more. April and May typically see the lowest rainfall but days are cooler (typically 10-15 degrees Celsius) and nights usually hover a few degrees above freezing. Snow cover often persists on higher ground into April and May (and occasionally early June) and is likely to be encountered along a significant portion of the hike (your host has a stock of snowshoes if needed). We recommend joining this trip in July and August for the warmest temperatures, but it’s great all summer.

In any month it can rain and get chilly at night so waterproofs, good hiking boots, a warm jumper and some thermals are vital. This time of year daylight in Norway is constant with only 2–3 hours of darkness in the evenings.

We had the most amazing few days in the fjords, it was everything I hoped it would be! Within our group we had a mix of couples and solo travellers and all got the opportunity to get to know each other. The activities are really well planned with two days of kayaking through the fjords with an incredibly beautiful hike in between. Our guide Benji was enthusiastic and knowledgeable, he worked really hard to ensure the trip ran smoothly and that everyone felt comfortable. His cooking efforts were also very appreciated with great meals provided. In early September we had a good mix of weather, the start of the trip was sunny and warm with a view of us swimming in the fjord, later on in the trip the scenery changed and we had some beautiful atmospheric low lying clouds that completely changed the landscape. Thanks so much for a brilliant trip.

Highly recommend this trip. It was my first time going on a trip like this, it took me out of my comfort zone at times but a great experience. It was made better with the great group we had and guides. Already planning where to go next with MBA! (My biggest relief was the sleeping bags were cleaner than I thought they would be 🤣)

Stunning, soul-uplifting, wonderful adventure. Completely packed and physical days in gorgeous scenery means 3 nights feels like you’ve been in a different world for a week. Your muscles will feel it too ….! Our guides Callum and Benji were incredible at taking care of us, cooking amazing food, keeping us entertained and laughing even when the weather was really quite grim at times and extremely well organised. Take care of the kit list but remember you’ll have to decant into a dry bag and a large plastic bag the things you need for 3 days / 2 nights so pack wisely. If you’re going end of season use the two sleeping bags on offer, take your own blow up roll mat and pillow - it’ll be worth it, and prepare for a physically demanding but more than do-able trip with incredible moments to remember. DO IT ☺️❤️.

Really glad I decided to book this trip, it was a last minute decision but created a lasting memory among a 2-month Euro trip. Scenery is stunning and I throughly enjoyed the hike to the top of the fjord, the food/camping situation and the group was awesome. Must admit that kayaking was harder than I expected and it’s quite demanding. The tour guide Emma is a legend and made the group feel safe and fun throughout, and went above and beyond to make us all have a good time. As a vegan I had no issues with missing out and was always catered for. Thanks Emma, the crew and MBA! Go forth and enjoy Viking territory.

What a great weekend!

We've had an incredible time. The fjords are just gorgeous. Kayaking is just serene. The view at the top of the fjord is lovely. I must warn that this is a pretty intense weekend, even though it is marked as moderate. A few people in our group described the hike as "one of" or "the most" challenging hike they've done. More so if it's raining (as it often does). However, grouping around the fire under a starry sky after 12km of kayaking or a 22km hike is so rewarding. I cannot thank our guide, Benji, enough <3

Wow what an adventure !

Wow what an adventure ! From the very start to the very end it was so well planned and organised. Our guide, Benji, was so incredible and fun to be around. He made the whole experience even better.

The food was excellent, even for my friend and I that are vegan/vegetarian. We never went hungry and Benji even provided hot drinks and snacks on the hike.

If you are considering this trip, please book it. It was sensational and everything you expect and more. Norway is a truly beautiful country x

Best trip ever!

My son and I went on this trip together as hiking is something we both enjoy doing when back at home. We’ve never been kayaking together so to do this along the hiking was an added bonus. The experience we shared together exceeded our expectations due to many reasons. The company, Much Better Adventures, who we booked our trip with were absolutely superb to deal with, the process of booking, information shared with us, value for money and the experience itself was incredible. Our guide, Katie, was fantastic and she added to our already superb experience. Katie was professional, informative and she basically just became one our ‘Norway family members’ and joined in all the fun with us all whilst always remaining professional and guiding us through the Fjords safely. A second to none experience from the very start until we boarded the plane to return home. I couldn’t recommend travelling with this company anymore than I have.

David M.(September 2024)
Great trip

Really enjoyed this trip in a stunning location. Meet and greet at the airport very smooth and the drive to Voss a good icebreaker with the rest of the group. The hostel at Voss was very welcoming and comfortable (local cider pretty good after a chilly swim in the lake) and a good breakfast set up day 1. Kayaking from Undredal to our camp was great, amazing scenery, excellent lunch, fun in a waterfall and comfortable pace. The campsite and equipment spot on, the views along the fjord spectacular, dinner delicious by the campfire. Hiking Breiskrednosi was well worth the effort (tough stretch up to the plateau) in the sunshine, with a cooling dip on return. The sun stayed out for the final day kayaking back to Gudvangen, via a climb up to a waterfall enlivened by a couple of the group going into the falls. The group dynamic worked really well and was for me a highlight. Top of the list was our guide Benji - a natural leader, very supportive and professional and good fun. As a reasonably fit 63 year old this was a good challenge and a something completely different to experience.

Fahmygirgis(September 2024)
Incredible Experience

This was a truly one of a kind experience. Katie was an excellent guide and incredibly thoughtful to the needs and different activity levels of the group. The hike was steep but well worth the view.

Summer at the summit

Had an awesome few days hiking and kayaking in the beautiful Norwegian fjords. It was the first time doing something like this on my own, and there was naturally some trepidation. So if you're in a similar position and wondering whether to book – wonder no more – book it, you won't regret it.

Perfect location, superb food (and wine) with a great bunch of like-minded people and Benji, our stellar guide who looked after us every paddle, every meal and every step of the way.

Honestly couldn't fault it – even the weather was idyllic – as you can see from the photos 🌞

Only question is – what trip to do next? 😎

A wonderful trip and a must do

A Wonderful Trip and a Must-Do Adventure This trip was an amazing experience, and I can't recommend it enough! Day 1: Arrival and Exploration The trip started smoothly with an easy meet-up at Bergen Airport. The airport is quite small, so it was easy to find the sign being held up. From there, we took a coach to Voss, which took about an hour. The ride offered beautiful views of Norway, making the journey enjoyable. The bus was comfortable, even equipped with a restroom. The hostel in Voss was very nice. I opted for a single room, which wasn’t much more expensive. However, I spoke to others who shared a room, and they said it was perfectly fine. We had a good briefing at the hostel and were then split into smaller groups with whom we'd spend the rest of the trip. I decided to explore on my own and took a ride on the Gondola, which was pretty cool. Afterward, I grabbed some food and got an early night to be ready for the next day. Others went out for drinks, and the whole atmosphere was warm and friendly. Some even tried the sauna and did the hot-cold plunge in the lake, which looked like fun. Day 2: Kayaking and Camping Breakfast at the hostel was plentiful and of good quality, providing a great chance to meet other people going on the excursions. We then took a short coach ride to Gudvangen, where the facilities were excellent, with complimentary hot drinks and snacks. Once in our groups, we met our guide, who helped everyone get to know each other. We were then outfitted with wetsuits, paddle jackets, and kayaking boots, and packed our gear into a heavy-duty dry bag. I brought my own sleeping bag in a compression sack, and there was plenty of room for it, along with my hiking poles. We also shared the food and supplies for the trip in our kayaks. Everything was well-organized, and there was nothing to worry about. The kayaking along the beautiful fjords was incredible. The conditions were perfect for us, with no headwind, making it an easy paddle. We stopped by the fjord waterside for lunch and explored a nearby waterfall, which was tremendous. All in all, we kayaked for about 5-6 hours, though it felt much shorter because it was so enjoyable. Our campsite for the night was already set up with tents in bags, which were easy to assemble. I brought my own inflatable compact airbed which I recommend as the foam ones provided dont offer much comfort. The site had a wooden bench and table with a tarp, as well as a fire pit with logs. Dinner was cooked for us, and we spent the evening around the fire, toasting marshmallows, sharing jokes, and chatting. There was also plenty of red wine for those who wanted it. I follow a plant-based diet, and they catered to my needs perfectly, with plenty of food and snacks.

Day 3: A Challenging Hike After a good night’s sleep, with the soothing sound of rain on the tent and an owl hooting, we had a nice breakfast and prepared for the hike. We paddled across the water and set off early to reach the summit. The hike was long and challenging, and if you're not used to hill hiking, it will test you, but you will make it. We started on a farmer’s track before moving onto rocky terrain. We took a 20-minute break at a plateau by a lake, but it got cold quickly when we stopped moving. The hike then continued with more craggy walking and a steep incline, taking about 5 hours to reach the top. It was tiring, but the spectacular views made it all worth it. The descent, especially in the rain, was tough and took another 5 hours. I was shattered and soaked by the end, but it was completely worth it. That evening, we dried out, warmed up, and enjoyed a lovely curry cooked by our guide. It was a hard day, but one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. Day 4: Final Kayak and Farewell We had a hearty breakfast of pancakes, jam, and fruit, probably because everyone needed to refuel after the previous day’s hike. Then, we enjoyed another glorious day of kayaking through breathtaking views. Again, it felt like we were only out for an hour or two, but we actually paddled for 4-5 hours. We arrived at a lovely waterside village, where we left our wetsuits and gear, and had some lunch. Afterward, we returned to the base from Day 1 for a warm shower and hot drinks. A word of advice: book hold luggage and pack some dry clothes to change into when you return. Despite my efforts, everything I brought got wet, and having dry clothes made a big difference. Sadly, it was then time to take the coach back to the airport and head home. Our guide, Jess, was fantastic, working tirelessly from dawn till dusk. Despite not feeling well (which we only found out later), she remained cheerful and ensured we all had a great time. The people on the trip were great too, from various backgrounds, and it was a pleasure to meet them. They made sure I was okay when I felt drained after the hike, and everyone was supportive and friendly. I am 100% doing this trip again—it was that good. If you’re considering it, just do it!

Christine O.(September 2024)
Stunning location, fabulous team, challenging hike

Everything was well organised and they made good use of the 3 days. Kayaking through the fjords was magical as we made our way between mountains and low hanging mist. I slightly misjudged "wild camping", but I soon got used to "going in the woods". The food was lovely and we all enjoyed watching the sun go down around the campfire.

The hike though was quite challenging. In parts it's a 40% incline and I was easily the slowest in the group. The way down was a bit of a mudslide when it started raining - the walking poles helped here. The view was worth it though :D

Catherine W.(September 2024)
Hard to put into words how incredible this was!

I don’t even know where to start, the whole trip from start to finish was brilliant. We had perfect weather, the views are spectacular, and the people, oh my god some of the best people I’ve ever met! Our guide Jess is a super human, our group was wonderful and we all just clicked. The hike is challenging but everyone is there to support you and you pull each other through the hardest parts. It really was an unforgettable trip, I can’t fault a thing and I want to do it all again. If you’re looking for a trip filled with adventure, stunning scenery, laughter, and a challenge then get this booked!

Benji's Fjord Angels!

September in the Norwegian Fjords was awesome. Three days of tranquility. The weather was beautiful, the landscape spectacular. Benji was our multi skilled, chilled, happy and entertaining guide! We had a great group with a mix of people, all liked minded, enjoying and exploring the wilderness together. The food was delicious, the fire mesmerising and the camp site even had its own cold water plunge pool (aka the Fjord!). Very refreshing after a day of kayaking and hiking. The only downside of the trip was having to leave! Thank you for an amazing time.

Kayak - Hike - Kayak

The trip was slow to start due to flight times you end up travelling for a day before you get into the good stuff. However that said the pick up, coach trip and arrival at the hostel was smooth and very professional. The hostel itself was one of the best I’ve stayed in with a fabulous view over the lake at Voss.

Once we got to the activity centre we were warmly Greeted with food and a hot drink with our briefing. Where we were splinting our groups and allocated our guides. We had Callum who was superb not just as a guide but as a human being as well. He was knowledgeable, interested in his group and a complete professional when it came to allowing us to explore on the fjord and climb.

We were well catered for, excellently guided by Callum, took in beautiful scenery and felt as if the trip didn’t lack anything. All the camping gear was easy to use and fit for purpose. I’d book again with these guys in a heart beat.

Our recommended travel insurance provider is Campbell Irvine, as their insurance offers all of the above.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 47kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000miles/1609km would be approx. 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person if there was 2 of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight London - New York would be approx. 1,619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approx. 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

The trip will be split into groups of up to 10 people. Let us know if you are travelling with friends, and we will make sure you are in the same group as friends who have booked.

One of the most beautiful places in the world. A fjord is a deep, narrow and elongated part of the sea, that stretches inland for miles, winding around mountains, valleys, and steep cliffs. The fjords were formed by the giant glacier tongues and shaped over several ice ages.

There are a plenty of kayaks available for you to use with a mix of single and doubles available depending on your preference.

You're free to bring any luggage or suitcase you wish with you to Voss. On day 2, you'll check out of your accommodation with all of your luggage and transfer by bus to the host's kayaking base in Gudvangen. Here, you'll be given a 22-litre dry bag to pack everything into for your kayaking, camping and hiking adventure (excluding your sleeping bag and sleeping mat, unless you bring your own). You will be given a hard waterproof case for your camera/phone too, and you'll want to keep certain things handy such as your water bottle, cap, sunscreen and snacks. You'll need to pack light as your dry bag has to fit into the hatched compartments (bulkheads) of the kayak, along with the group's food and equipment which will be shared among the kayaks. The remainder of your luggage that you don't need on the adventure can be left behind at the kayaking base in Gudvangen, where it will be safely stored until your return.

Don't stress, your host will explain all during the briefing.

Absolutely. The train is 45 minutes faster than the included transfer and is one of the most spectacular journeys you can take by rail. Here’s how:

From the airport, get the Flybussen airport shuttle to Bergen bus station, or the Bybanen (city light rail - cheaper but slower). Buses to/from the airport run every 10-15 minutes, and cost roughly 90NOK (£9) each way. The Bybanen is approx 40NOK (£4).

From the bus station it’s a few minutes walk to the train station. A taxi from the airport to train station can be booked for between 350-550NOK (£35-£55), depending on traffic.

Trains run regularly throughout the day and don’t need to be booked in advance, with a single ticket to Voss costing roughly 200NOK (£20). Trains to Oslo stop at Voss.

You can buy tickets at the ticket office up until 5.30 pm, or from ticket machines. If you want to check the timetable or book online head here.

Voss Hostel is a 12 minute walk from the station. Head out of the main station and turn right on the road. Follow the road until just before the roundabout (about 750m) then take the left turning, following the road for 200m more - straight to the hostel.

For the return, make your life easy by jumping on the already included transfers to Bergen Airport.

We can recommend the following from budget to high price. There are many other hotels, however these are selected for their convenience and/or from experience:

Accommodation in Bergen

Here’s what your local guide has to say on drones:

We do not really encourage bringing drones on this trip for several reasons:

  • There are limited times where there would be possibilities for flying the drone.
  • We need to keep the campsites free of drone traffic in agreement with the landowners.
  • There is often livestock animals in some areas that may get affected and we need to keep a good relationship with the farmers.
  • We have seen some people being frustrated by drone traffic and can understand this.

Having said this, we do not prohibit drone use as it is out of our legislation. As long as it does not interfere with the issues mentioned above and you can fit the drone in the kayak, it will be OK to bring it along. Just please do discuss the use with other group members sometime after meeting up with them on the first morning to settle this.

The best way to meet your host is to take the train from Oslo centre to Voss (not Bergen), and then head to Voss Hostel. See the FAQ how to get to Voss hostel from the airport and just follow the directions from Voss station to the hostel. The train journey takes about 6.5 hours and goes through some amazing scenery.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.

Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers are familiar with the practical information provided on the Government’s FCDO website, where current travel advice can be found by searching for the applicable destination(s).

For customers joining this trip from other international destinations – please also read the official travel advice applicable to your country of residence/origin, as this may differ.

We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates on a daily basis so this does mean that prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.

If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.

All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy (18+) as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. Children can be accommodated on some private departures.

You're always in good company on one of our adventures.

Our trips are typically made up of a mixture of solo travellers and small groups of 2 or 3 friends, with most in their 30s-50s.

Our sociable adventures are solo-friendly by design and naturally attract outdoorsy people with a shared mindset; a love for adventure, a desire to push themselves and meet awesome, like-minded people along the way.

It’s this camaraderie that has so often turned a great adventure into a life-changing one.

Don't just take our word for it:

  • 95% of people rate the group dynamics on our trips 5/5
  • 90% of people recommend joining a trip to make new friends
  • 75% of people have met people on our trips that they would now consider friends
