Key Information

Day 1

Head to Shkodër

View of Shkoder Albania

Driving

2hrs

Your adventure kicks off at Tirana Airport, where you’ll hop on a bus and head north to Shkodër, the vibrant gateway to northern Albania. The drive takes you through the coastal basin, passing farmland, small towns, and rivers. Upon arrival, you’ll head straight to the lakeside village of Shirokë, where you can cool off with a swim in the warm lake waters or grab a light snack if you’re feeling peckish. Then it’s on to Shkodër, a city with over 2,500 years of history, nestled between two rivers, the largest lake in the Balkans, and the foothills of the Albanian Alps. As the day winds down, the city comes alive with the “xhiro”, an evening stroll through the pedestrian zone lined with cafés and bars. Afterwards, enjoy a delicious traditional Albanian dinner before settling in for the night. Please note that Shkodër is your last chance to pick up any last-minute supplies or store extra luggage before your trek officially begins tomorrow!

Day 2

Cross the iconic Valbona Pass

At the top of Valbona Pass, Albania

Hiking

6hrs · 10km · 1075m up · 775m down

Driving

3hrs

Leave the morning buzz of Shkodër behind as you drive through semi-rural villages along the shores of the largest lake in the Balkans, heading north toward the Montenegrin border. From there, the road winds through deep-cut valleys into the Albanian Alps. Upon arriving in Theth, your luggage will be loaded onto horses (soft bags only), and you’ll set off on one of the most scenic hikes in the Accursed Mountains, crossing from Theth to Valbona and passing from one national park to another. This trail is popular for good reason, so expect to meet other hikers along the way. From tomorrow, you’ll venture onto far wilder, rarely travelled paths. The hike begins through a shaded beech forest before gradually ascending to the famed Valbona Pass (1811m), where breathtaking 360° views of rugged peaks and deep valleys await. From here, the descent winds through picturesque meadows and steep, zigzagging paths, revealing untouched landscapes stretching as far as the eye can see. Reaching Valbona, you’ll hop into local transport for an adventurous ride through the dry riverbed to your accommodation, a simple but cosy, family-run guesthouse. Settle in, soak up the mountain views, and enjoy a well-earned home-cooked meal. That’s your first big hike complete!

Day 3

Border crossing and glacial lakes

Buni Jezerce, Albania

Hiking

6.5hrs · 10.5km · 1075m up · 825m down

After breakfast, your luggage is once again loaded onto horses, and you set off on foot straight from your accommodation. The trail leads into a glacial valley, carved by ancient ice flows descending from Mount Jezerca - the highest peak in the Accursed Mountains at 2692m. As you gain altitude, breathtaking views of the towering peaks unfold, while in spring, carpets of wildflowers paint the landscape in ever-changing colours. At 1650m, you’ll reach a former military hut, now used by shepherds. Until the early ’90s, this was a heavily restricted border zone, where any attempt to flee Albania was punishable by death. Today, only weathered border stones and stories shared by your guide serve as reminders of its dark past. Soon, you’ll arrive at a high mountain pass on the Montenegro border. Most hikers turn back here, but not you. Instead, you’ll cross the green border and continue into Montenegro. Weather and schedule permitting, your guide will lead you on an adventurous, partly trailless detour to a stunning glacial lake at the foot of Mount Jezerca, where the bravest can dare a dip in its ice-cold waters. If, for any reason, you skip this lake, there’s an alternative stop at a karst spring further down the valley. Finally, 4x4 vehicles await for a bumpy ride down the remote Ropojana Valley to the village of Vusanje. Tonight, you’ll settle into wooden bungalows, your family-run base for another night in the wild.

Day 4

Hike the double peak of Taljanka and Popodija

Hiking

6hrs · 9.5km · 950m up · 850m down

After breakfast, hop on a short ride from Vusanje to the small town of Gusinje, where a mosque, a Catholic church, and an Orthodox church stand close together, reflecting the diverse ethnic and religious mix of this Balkan border triangle between Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro. Soon, you’ll arrive at the breathtaking Grebaja Valley in Prokletije National Park, where sheer limestone peaks rise dramatically from the valley floor. While these jagged karst towers are reserved for climbers, you’ll set off on a stunning hike through beech forests, following one of the Balkans’ most spectacular ridge walks. The trail crosses a series of mini peaks, each offering an even more impressive view than the last. Eventually, you’ll reach Mount Taljanka (2057m), which marks the border with Albania and rewards you with a jaw-dropping 360° panorama over the remote Kelmend region - truly a postcard-perfect view! After a well-earned picnic break, descend, crossing the green border back into Albania. Passing the ruins of an old military barracks, you’ll continue through dense forest before arriving on foot in the village of Lëpushë. This is the highest settlement in Kelmend and your base for the next two nights. Tonight, you’ll settle into a cosy guesthouse with three bedrooms and shared bathrooms - your home in the heart of the Albanian Alps.

Day 5

Tracing the footsteps of Kelmend Valley’s shepherds

Sheperds and mountains in Albania

Hiking

4.5hrs · 10km · 500m up · 825m down

Today’s more easy-going hike takes you through some of Albania’s northernmost landscapes. Setting off from your guesthouse in Lëpushë, you’ll ascend towards the Bordoleci Pass (1347m), the highest point of the road through the Kelmend Valley. From here, follow the ridgeline with sweeping views behind you as you make your way towards Mount Greben (1840m). Its flat summit offers beautiful panoramas across the borderlands with Montenegro. Descending from the peak, you’ll reach a summer meadow where local families move during the school holidays - especially during the blueberry season from August onwards. If they’re around, you’ll have the chance to stop and learn more about their traditional pastoral lifestyle, a way of life that’s slowly disappearing. The path then leads down to Vermosh, Albania’s northernmost settlement, where you can cool off with a well-earned swim in the river. After relaxing by the water, a short transfer takes you back to your guesthouse in Lëpushë for some well-deserved downtime and another night in the mountains.

Day 6

Hike the Dobraces Pass to Nikc

Wild swimming spots in Albania

Hiking

5.5hrs · 15km · 550m up · 1100m down

Driving

2hrs

Your final hike of the week begins with a gentle uphill climb out of the village, leading towards the shoulder of the razor-edged Mount Golishti (2021m). Once a well-trodden path lined with summer meadows and frequented by mule caravans, it has grown quieter over the years as families move away and traditional mountain life fades. Without electricity or modern comforts, life up here is harsh but also a peaceful escape from the modern world - one of the reasons Kelmend was once called the “land of the living past.” While the Valbona Pass you trekked earlier in the week was a stunning introduction to the Accursed Mountains, it’s also one of the most popular hiking routes in the Balkans. Today, by contrast, you’ll follow rarely visited trails far from the crowds, enjoying the solitude of the mountains. Reaching the village of Nikc, you can stop for a well-earned drink before hopping into the minibus for a scenic drive down through the canyon towards Tamara, with a chance for a final swim in some inviting natural pools before heading back to Shkodër. Back in the city, you’ll return to the buzz of urban life and the comforts of civilisation. Tonight, raise a glass to an unforgettable journey across two countries, three national parks, and countless wild valleys - that’s your trek completed!

Day 7

Farewell Shkodër

Tirana city, Albania. Photo: GettyImages-1214330003

Driving

2hrs

Time to say farewell as you head home or continue your travels. After breakfast, a group transfer departs from Shkodër to Tirana, with an estimated arrival at around 10:00. You can be dropped off at the airport for any flight departing after midday or in the city centre if you’d like to explore Tirana before catching a later flight, or even extend your trip with a city break.

Transfers

On Day 1, you can choose to be picked up either at Tirana airport or at Tirana Rinas Bus Station if you’re already in town. If you’re flying in on the first day of the trip, be sure to book a flight that arrives no later than 13:00. Your host will confirm transfer details before your trip, but the group transfer to Shkodër is generally scheduled for early afternoon after all morning flights have landed. A return group transfer from Shkodër to Tirana is included on Day 7, with an expected airport drop-off around 10:00. To allow enough time, we recommend booking a flight that departs no earlier than noon. If no one in the group has an early flight on Day 7, the transfer may be pushed back a bit for a later departure, giving you extra time to sleep in. A free drop-off in Tirana city centre can also be arranged if you plan to extend your stay. If your flight times don’t align with these set group transfers, private transfers between Tirana and Shkodër can also be arranged upon request.

For those travelling outside the trip’s official dates, independent transfers between Tirana and the airport are easy to arrange. The Rinas Express shuttle runs daily from 06:00 to 24:00, departing every hour. The journey takes about 30 minutes. If you’d like to arrive early or stay longer, your host can help arrange extra accommodation in Tirana or Shkodër - see the Optional Extras section for details.

Travel options

There are regular direct flights to Tirana from major airports across the UK and Europe. Due to its proximity to Montenegro, you may also opt to fly into or out of Podgorica Airport, which is approximately 65km (a 1.5-hour drive) from Shkodër - the starting and ending point of your trip in Albania. If you choose this option, private transfers can be arranged upon request through your host. See the Optional Extras section for more details.

What is the food like?

Albanian food

Breakfasts during the trip typically include eggs, fresh bread, jam, honey, and coffee or tea. For lunch, you’ll be provided with fresh ingredients from your guesthouse to pack your own meal. You’re free to choose what you prefer, and we recommend bringing a reusable container and cutlery to reduce unnecessary packaging. Dinner is always a warm and filling meal after a big day of hiking, and courses often come in meze form and are served with vegetables, freshly baked bread and homemade cheeses. Sometimes beer, wine and (of course) raki are available to purchase too. If you'd like specific items or snacks, then please bring them from home.

Vegetarians and other dietary requirements and allergies can be catered for although options for vegans may be more limited given the remoteness of the locations visited. Gluten-intolerant travellers are suggested to bring supplements from home as gluten-free products are not readily available in the locations visited. Please just request on your passenger info form.

What is the accommodation like?

Hotel Tradita, Shkoder, Albania
Shkodër

On the first and last night of your trip, you’ll stay in a centrally located mid-range hotel in the vibrant city of Shkodër - usually the beautiful Hotel & Restaurant Tradita, nestled in the heart of the city. Since 1694, this historic building has stood as a symbol of Albanian heritage and tradition. As you explore the property, you’ll be transported back in time, immersed in the rich cultural history of Albania. Every corner of the hotel is adorned with traditional furniture and authentic Albanian-style décor, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. You’ll stay in twin-share rooms designed for maximum comfort, featuring a wardrobe, seating area, private bathroom with shower, and complimentary toiletries. Occasionally, depending on availability, your group may be accommodated in another charming, small-scale hotel or guesthouse of similar (3-star) standards, such as Hotel Treva, Rose Garden, or Petit Elita.

 Kol Gjoni Guesthouse, Valbona
On the trek

During the trek, you’ll stay four nights in small, family-run guesthouses or bungalows, offering an authentic taste of traditional mountain life. Accommodation is typically in same-gender triple rooms, with twin-share options provided where available (bedding included throughout). While simple, with shared bathrooms and basic furnishings, these stays offer a warm welcome and a chance to experience genuine Albanian hospitality. Plus, by staying in these remote lodgings, you’ll be directly supporting rural communities along the way.

Upgrades

Due to the limited capacity of the accommodations used during the trek, a single room upgrade is only available for two nights while in Shkoder. This is always on request and subject to availability, so be sure to request it at the time of booking. For pricing details, see the Optional Extras section.

This trip has been rated as Challenging

This trip features a mix of moderate to challenging hikes, with most days involving 5-7 hours on the trail. Expect a fair amount of ascent and descent (up to 1100m), but your guide will pace the journey with plenty of breaks for photos, scenic picnics, and even some opportunities for refreshing wild swims or dips in natural pools, creeks, lakes, and rivers. This is entirely optional, so you’re welcome to sit out if you prefer. While much of the hiking follows well-defined alpine paths, some sections are narrow, uneven, or rocky underfoot, with occasional off-trail routes. No prior experience is required, but being comfortable walking in the hills or mountains for 5-7 hours on varied terrain will help you get the most out of the adventure. To prepare, consider fitting in a few similar length hikes before the trip.

What if i need to skip an activity?

You’ll be trekking through remote areas with limited road access between overnight stops, so a good level of fitness is essential to ensure you are comfortable to complete the trek. In Lëpushë, where you’ll spend two nights, you have the option to skip the hike on Day 5 and enjoy a more relaxed day, soaking in the stunning mountain views from the guesthouse.

What will I need to carry?

You'll need to have a soft duffle bag or rucksack (max. 15kg) suitable for all your belongings which will be transported for you by vehicle, horses or mules, and then a small daypack (30-40L) to carry personal items and essentials during each hike.

Departures run throughout the summer season (June–September) and into early October. Summer weather in this part of the Balkans is typically dry, clear, and warm during the day, with cooler temperatures at night or at higher altitudes. Occasional rainfall is possible, and until the end of June, you may even encounter some lingering snow above 1800m, especially on north-facing slopes. Your guides will monitor conditions, stay prepared, and keep you informed before each day's trek.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 169kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000miles/1609km would be approx. 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person if there was 2 of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight London - New York would be approx. 1,619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approx. 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

Although Albania has only emerged as a top trekking destination in the last decade, the number of visitors to the Accursed Mountains is rising rapidly each year. While this growth has brought significant economic benefits to remote mountain communities, some areas have struggled with overdevelopment, congestion, and crowded trails. Many tour operators stick to the well-trodden Peaks of the Balkans route, often including multiple out-and-back hikes from Valbona and Theth. Instead, we’ve partnered with a trusted local host in Albania who is committed to sustainable tourism. We are proud to offer an itinerary that goes beyond the usual hotspots, crossing from valley to valley and even over the green border into Montenegro. This hybrid approach allows you to experience the highlights early in the trip before venturing into more remote, lesser-visited regions. By staying off the busiest trails, you’ll enjoy a more peaceful trekking experience while also supporting communities beyond Valbona and Theth, ensuring your visit has a broader and more positive impact.

During the trek you'll be trekking across the borders of Albania and Montenegro. Your host will collect a copy of your passport ahead of the trip and will apply for permits on your behalf, so there is no paperwork or applications for you to worry about.

No. You'll need to have a soft duffle bag or rucksack (max. 15kg) suitable for all your belongings which will be transported for you by horses or mules and sometines jeep and then a small daypack (30-40L) to carry personal items during the day.

Since the trip starts and ends in Shkoder, you can easily store any excess luggage and items you don't need during the trek at the hotel, ready for your return on Day 7. If you need more details, just check with your host.

The tap water in the mountains is generally safe to drink. Please bring along your own reusable water bottle to fill up at the hotels and guesthouses to avoid buying single use plastic bottles.

In adverse weather conditions, it may not be safe to ascend the most exposed paths. Your guide will monitor weather conditions and act accordingly. In the event of unusually high amounts of snow in June, you will not use crampons or ice picks on this non-technical trip and may divert routes instead. Your host will be in touch prior to departure and will let you know if any extreme weather is forecast. There are contingency plans for parts of the itinerary that are most likely to be impacted if there is unseasonable adverse weather.

There will be one lead guide for groups of up to 12 people.

This trip visits locations where daytime temperatures can be extremely high during the times of year when this trip operates. High humidity and limited access to shade can also be factors, and warm temperatures can continue into the nighttime, which additionally influences the body’s ability to cool down. Personal care should be taken to keep cool as best possible in the conditions, such as wearing appropriate clothing and proper hydration. Very high temperatures can impair an individual’s physical abilities to perform an activity that they may otherwise be able to do competently at cooler temperatures. People may experience symptoms associated with dehydration and Heat Stroke. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with high temperatures, by carefully managing the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided.
