Day 1
Welcome to Asturias

Driving
Your host will meet you on arrival at Bilbao Airport and drive you to the picturesque Asturian town of Arenas de Cabrales, one of the main gateways to the Picos de Europa National Park. Settle into your hotel, which will be your base for the next three nights, then meet up with your guides and fellow adventurers in the evening for a chat about the hikes ahead. Tuck into a traditional Asturian meal to get into the flavour of this unique part of Spain.
Day 2
The hikes begin in the western massif

Hiking
Hop in the van for the scenic drive from Arenas de Cabrales, gradually ascending deeper towards the western massif, with the towering peaks of Torrecerredo and Picos de Los Cabrones looming ahead. Your first hike in the Picos kicks off from Lake Ercina, a beautiful spot to pick up a winding trail into the mountains, passing shepherd's huts to the Marqués de Villaviciosa refuge. Grab a rest and a snack here before ascending to Cabeza La Verde peak (1719m) where you'll be rewarded with epic views whilst tucking into your packed lunch. Descend via the Majada de Belbin, a beautiful alpine meadow and grazing area known for its famous Gamonedo cheese, all the way back to Ercina Lake where you'll transfer back to Arenas de Cabrales. Head out for dinner this evening to sample some classic northern Spanish dishes.
Day 3
The iconic Naranjo de Bulnes

Hiking
The Pico's de Europa's most recognisable and iconic peak is the centre of attention today. Drive to Sotres, the highest village in the Picos and known as the 'last village of Asturias', then on to a small hamlet called Pandébano where today's epic hike begins. Kick off with an ascent to Collado Vallejo at around 1500m, gradually revealing views of the iconic Naranjo de Bulnes, also known as Pico Urriellu (2519m). Follow the trail through jaw-dropping scenery to reach the base of the mountain at 2000m, where a refuge offers the chance for a rest. Naranjo de Bulnes is a popular rock climbing spot, and you may see the tiny specks of climbers on the rock face high above. Tuck into a packed lunch before retracing your steps back to Pandebano, with the iconic peak looming behind you as you hike back then drive down the valley, returning to Arenas de Cabrales. Soak up your last night in Arenas with an evening meal, this is also a great opportunity to scope out a sidrería – a classic Asturian cider house. Along with milk and cheese, cider is perhaps Asturias' most famous product, and a must-try whilst here. Your next base in Espinama is a quieter and more remote spot!
Day 4
The Cares Gorge path

Hiking
Following yesterday's exploits around the iconic Naranjo del Bulnes, today you'll tick off one of the most famous hikes in Spain. Carved through the heart of the Picos de Europa is the renowned Cares Gorge, an easy yet epic hike through a stunning part of the mountain range. Hike along a narrow trail cut into the cliff face, crossing bridges and tunnels as the Cares River flows deep below you with drops of 300m to the valley floor at some points. The trail follows the Cares River from Poncebos, in Asturias province, all the way to Caín, in neighbouring León province. Caín is a blissful spot to grab lunch from one of the many cafes along the river. From here you'll transfer on to your next base in Espinama, a little hamlet nestled beneath the eastern massif of the Picos. You are now in Cantabria province, and this side of the Picos is a lush and green micro climate, with the dense Cantabrian forest providing a refuge for populations of brown bear, wolves, wild boar and chamois. You'll stop in picturesque Potes en route, with cafes, bars and shops to poke your head in before settling in to your quaint, family-run rural accommodation in Espinama. You'll tuck into a home-cooked dinner with local wines this evening.
Day 5
Summit Horcados Rojos (2506m)

Hiking
The short drive from Espinama this morning is a spectacular one, as the full vista of the eastern massif reveals itself in dramatic fashion as you round the corner on a winding road to reach Fuente De. Here you'll hop in the cable car that whisks hikers up 750m from the base to the high part of the massif in a matter of minutes. You'll follow a beautiful trail through the lunar landscape, eventually reaching a steep switchback trail that pushes on to the summit of Horcados Rojos (2506m). This is an incredible peak with breathtaking views of the central massif and the surrounding peaks, and even over to the Atlantic Ocean on a clear day. Descend carefully down the switchback trail and pick up the main route back to the cable car, stopping en route at the unique Cabaña Veronica refuge. Take in the incredible views over the lush green expanse of the Cantabrian forest surrounding Fuente De and Espinama before hopping back in the cable car to descend down the valley back to your base. Tuck into dinner and enjoy another restful evening in peaceful Espinama.
Day 6
Forest trails and waterfalls in the Picos foothills

Hiking
Having gorged on the high peaks and lunar landscapes of the Picos de Europa the last few days, today you can soak up the lower foothills and the lush, green, forested part of Cantabria beneath the eastern massif. A variant of the Camino de Santiago runs through here, and the area is richly biodiverse. Head off on a hike along forest trails past waterfalls, catching glimpses of the high peaks when the dense foliage opens up. You'll hike steadily up to the peaks of La Viorna and Alto de San Martín, with amazing panoramic vistas views of the Ándara Massif. Return to Espinama for dinner and accommodation on your final night in this part of Spain.
Day 7
Adios, Picos!

Driving

Transfers
Your host will arrange a group transfer from Bilbao Airport to Arenas de Cabrales: please arrive at Bilbao Airport by 13:00 on Day 1 in order to join the group transfer. It takes roughly 2.5hrs to reach Arenas de Cabrales from Bilbao. If you are already in Bilbao, your host can arrange a collection from locations in the city. On Day 7, your host will provide a group transfer from Espinama back to Bilbao Airport, dropping you off at approximately 12:00 (midday).
This trip is also accessible from Santander. While there is no scheduled group pick up or drop off from here on the first and last days, your host can arrange this for anyone arriving in or departing from Santander instead of Bilbao. You can request this directly with your host after booking the trip.
Travel options
Bilbao Airport is accessible via various direct flights from the UK and mainland Europe. Flights from outside of Europe are typically indirect. If you're looking to make your own way to Arenas de Cabrales and not utilise the group transfer at Bilbao Airport, you may wish to look into combining flight options into/out of Asturias, Santander and Bilbao airports, all of which are only an hour or two by road from Arenas de Cabrales, with public transport options between them.
Rail travellers can get to the start of this trip via Bilbao's main railway station, Bilbao Abando, which is well connected to various major cities in Spain and France. From Bilbao you can get as far as Arriondas by train, and from there it's a bus ride to Arenas de Cabrales.

What is the food like?

Breakfasts at your hotel bases will be plentiful buffets of breads, meats, eggs and cheeses, cereals, fruits and yoghurt. Lunches are not included in the trip price, allowing you to buy your own lunch each morning before the day's hike from local bakeries and shops in Arenas de Cabrales and Espinama. You should budget around €15 per day for lunches and snacks, and it is best to have this in cash (Euros) in this part of the world. If you like to eat a lot of snacks whilst hiking, then it is recommended to bring your own stash as options in the shops are limited. Evening meals will be local specialities in a combination of restaurants selected by your guide, as well as dinners taken in the hotel. You'll enjoy a variety of options typical to Asturias and Cantabria, with some tapas dishes and pintxos (small traditional snacks popular across northern Spain), a main course usually with fish or meat, dessert and local wines. Asturias and Cantabria are famous for their milk, so there are plenty of cheeses to sample throughout the trip. Another local Asturian speciality is cider; you can attempt the traditional pouring method – raising the bottle above your head and pouring into the glass from a height, so as to carbonate the cider while holding the glass low in your other hand. This is more challenging than the locals make it look!
Vegetarians, vegans and most other dietary requirements and allergies can be catered for with advance notice and planning – please just request this on your passenger info form – however, please be aware that you may find the meal options to be repetitive.
What is the accommodation like?

Arenas de Cabrales
Your first base of the trip is in Arenas de Cabrales, one of the main gateways to the Picos de Europa. The River Cares runs through here, famous for its trout and salmon which you'll find on the menu throughout summer. The hotel is a renovated country home with wooden beams, stone walls, antique furniture, a cosy bar and an open fireplace. You'll stay in twin-share rooms with ensuite bathrooms.

Espinama
Your second base of the trip is nestled beneath the peaks of the eastern massif of the Picos, in Espinama. You'll stay at Hostal Remoña, a charming guesthouse in a quaint village nestled beneath the peaks – not far from where the road comes to end as it meets the impassable mountains. The guesthouse is well known for its homemade, traditional Cantabrian food and extensive wine list, which you can enjoy while taking in the views of the mountains. This side of the Picos is more forested, with populations of Cantabrian bears in the surrounding hills. You'll stay in twin-share rooms with private bathrooms.

This trip has been rated as Moderate
You'll be hiking an average of 4-5 hours daily (excluding breaks) in a mountain environment, so you’ll need to be in good physical shape and have ideally some previous hiking experience – both for your safety and to enjoy the trip to the fullest. You'll be led by expert, local mountain guides who know the area inside out, so you'll be in safe hands.
Over five days you can expect to cover an average of 13km per day, with elevation gains and losses up to 900m over uneven, rocky terrain with some sustained ascents or descents. The guide will assess the group's fitness, so the routes may be slightly shortened or extended on occasion keeping in mind what's best for your group. If you are not used to multi-day hiking trips then putting in some weekend hikes and physical preparation (cardio and strength training) in advance is advisable.
There are some parts of this trip which may not be suitable for vertigo sufferers. There is nothing too technical or extremely exposed, however on the Cares Gorge path there are sheer drops on the side of a narrow path which may be unnerving if you have a strong fear of heights.
What if i need to skip an activity?
You are welcome to skip any of the hiking days on the trip if you don't feel up to it on any given day. You can relax at the base in Arenas de Cabrales or Espinama and meet up with the group in the evening after the hiking day is completed.
What will I need to carry?
You'll just need to carry a daypack for each hike, with your personal items, waterproofs and extra layers, water and a packed lunch. We suggest anything 25-35 litres in size should be sufficient.
The weather in the Picos can be very changeable, so be sure to pack for all weathers; though of course, the month you travel in will impact the conditions you encounter.
In May and June, temperatures in the lower elevations will vary between 10-20°C/50-68°F, at mid-altitude (1000-1500m) around 5-15°C/41-59°F and in the high peaks (above 2000m) between 0-10°C/32-50°F, with occasional frost and snow pack still on the higher elevations. These months will experience some rain, especially on the Cantabrian side on the second half of the trip.
In July and August, things heat up in the lower elevations averaging between 20-30°C/68-86°F, sometimes hotter. At mid-altitude averages tend to be between 10-20°C/50-68°F, perfect for hiking. Things are still cool in the high peaks, so expect 5-15°C/41-59°F with layers still needed on those days, such as the Horcados Rojos summit day. Summer weather in the Picos is generally dry and stable, though occasional storms can develop especially in the afternoons.
September and October are still fantastic months to visit north of Spain. Effectively these months offer the reverse of May and June in terms of temperatures and conditions, with some beautiful autumn colours developing in the forested area around Espinama as autumn kicks in properly.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 166kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000miles/1609km would be approx. 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person if there was 2 of you in it).
- A return economy class flight London - New York would be approx. 1,619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approx. 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Your host is a true expert on all things to do with the Picos, and knows these mountains better than nearly anybody else in the world. If conditions aren't suitable at any stage, for example if there is heavy snow on the higher elevations on the early trips in the season, there are myriad alternative hikes at mid-elevations that your host will pivot to.
For groups of six or less, there will be one hiking guide. For groups of seven or more, there will be two hiking guides.
This trip has two bases, spending three nights each in Arena de Cabrales and Espinama. Your luggage will be transferred between the two bases and can remain securely in your hotel room throughout the trip.
The water in the Picos is safe to drink and you are able to fill up freely at the hotels that you stay at and at refuges you pass by on some of the hiking routes. Make sure to bring a couple of 1-litre reusable drinking bottles or a bladder.
This trip visits locations where daytime temperatures can be extremely high during the times of year when this trip operates. High humidity and limited access to shade can also be factors, and warm temperatures can continue into the nighttime, which additionally influence the body’s ability to cool down. Personal care should be taken to keep cool as best possible in the conditions, such as wearing appropriate clothing and proper hydration. Very high temperatures can impair an individual’s physical abilities to perform an activity that they may otherwise be able to do competently at cooler temperatures. People may experience symptoms associated with dehydration and Heat Stroke. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with high temperatures, by carefully managing the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided.
