Key Information
Day 1
Touch down in Portugal
Welcome to Portugal! Meet your host at Faro Airport for the transfer to Vale da Telha (which takes about 1.5 hours), in the heart of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. This is one the finest preserved stretches of wild European coastline, weaving through the Alentejo and Algarve regions. Over the next five days you'll hike part of one of the world’s most stunning coastal treks: the Fishermen's Trail of the famous Rota Vicentina. The full route spans a whopping 226.5km and is divided into 13 stages, but on this adventure you'll hike the final six stages. Always with the mighty Atlantic Ocean in sight, be prepared to be rewarded with dramatic cliffs, hidden caves, quaint rural villages and turquoise waters at every turn. This afternoon, settle into your cosy hotel, get to know your fellow adventurers and enjoy a delicious meal while you hear all about the itinerary ahead.
Day 2
Along ancient cliffs from Arrifana to Carrapateira
Hiking
After breakfast, you'll embark on the first stage of the Fishermen’s Trail, where dramatic cliffs and ancient rock formations offer some of the trek’s most scenic views. Though the sandy paths can be challenging at times, the effort will be rewarded with stunning vistas, peaceful beaches, and the wild beauty of Portugal's southwestern coast. Starting in the fishing village of Arrifana, you’ll pass the popular surfing spot of Arrifana Beach and the striking Pedra da Agulha rock formation. The trail continues to remote, serene Canal Beach and then on to Praia do Vale Figueiras, a secluded beach framed by sand dunes, perfect for a rest or refreshing dip. The hike also moves inland through a forest of native pines and stevia trees, leading to Carrapateira, near Bordeira Beach, known for its vast dunes. Eventually, a short transfer will bring you to your guesthouse in Aldeia da Pedralva, a once-abandoned village now transformed into a rural retreat. Here, you'll experience the charm of small village life, with welcoming locals adding to the unforgettable atmosphere.
Day 3
Wild coast and rural paths from Carrapateira to Vila do Bispo
Hiking
A short morning transfer will take you back to the coast where you will rejoin the Fishermen's Trail. Today's hike will be a mix of dramatic coastal scenery and rural paths, offering cliffside views, windswept plains, and peaceful countryside. Leaving Carrapateira, the route weaves through a landscape of low-lying shrubs and wildflowers, especially vibrant in spring, where the scent rosemary and thyme fills the air. As you walk, you’ll cross vast, open plains and gentle hills, occasionally glimpsing the rugged coastline in the distance. The cliffs reappear near Praia do Amado, one of the Algarve's most famous surf spots, with its dramatic red cliffs and rolling waves. Continuing on, hike through quiet farmlands and fields dotted with grazing livestock, offering a peaceful contrast to the wilder coastal sections. As you approach Vila do Bispo, the landscape becomes more rural, characterised by traditional stone walls, wind-sculpted trees, and the occasional small farm. This charming village, nestled amidst rolling hills, marks the end of today's stage and will be your home for tonight. Enjoy some time to wander amongst the whitewashed houses, narrow streets, and soak in the relaxed pace. In the evening, you can opt to head out for a traditional meal with your group.
Day 4
Hike to Sagres, via the most southwesterly point of mainland Europe
Hiking
Fuel up on breakfast then leave behind the charming whitewashed buildings and narrow streets of Vila do Bispo to through the scenic countryside, featuring rolling hills adorned with wildflowers in season. As you approach the coast, the landscape transforms dramatically, revealing steep cliffs that plunge into the Atlantic. Hike past the peculiar rock formation of Telheiro Beach, a geological wonder and invaluable site of scientific research, before reaching Cabo de São Vicente, known as the most southwestern point of mainland Europe. For the ancient people of the eastern Mediterranean (such as the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, and Arabs), the Cape of St. Vincent was the navigation threshold to the west before the 'mare incognitum' – the 'unknown sea' – which meant it was known for millennia as the 'finis terrae' ('the end of the world'). Soak in the panoramic views of the ocean and the dramatic cliffs, watching the waves crash against the rocks below before continuing on to Sagres, a historic town steeped in maritime lore with a laid-back vibe. Check into your comfortable hotel and spend the remainder of the afternoon as you wish – perhaps exploring the 15th-century fortress or relaxing on the golden sands of Tonel or Mareta beaches.
Day 5
Hike rugged trails and secluded coves to Salema
Hiking
After enjoying breakfast in Sagres, set out on one of the most demanding yet rewarding stages of your trek. The trail winds along a rugged coastline, taking you through a diverse landscape of steep cliffs, sandy beaches, dramatic drops, breathtaking lookout points, and rocky pools. Some sections require careful navigation due to their uneven and rocky nature. The path descends multiple times, leading you to secluded beaches such as Martinhal, Barranco, Ingrina, Zavial, Furnas, and Figueira, where you can take a moment to relax, listen to the sound of the waves, or take a dip in the sea. As you near Salema, the trail leads into a more populated area, guiding you into the heart of this charming fishing village where your hike concludes. Famed for its traditional Portuguese charm, Salema's colourful houses line the beachfront, making it a picturesque place to unwind after your hike. Tonight, you will glamp at Salema Eco Camp, a regenerative tourism project recognised as a candidate for the Zero Waste business certificate. Here, you'll stay in comfortable tents or lodges equipped with all amenities, offering both charm and stunning views.
Day 6
The final stretch to Lagos!
Hiking
Your final day of hiking combines the last two stages of the Rota Vicentina into one memorable trek. Starting in Salema, follow a trail that leads you past untouched beaches and rugged cliffs, weaving through hidden corners along the coast and passing the charming villages of Luz and Burgau. This stretch remains relatively quiet, giving you a chance to enjoy the more natural, less developed side of the Algarve before reaching the busier areas of the region. As you approach Lagos, you'll encounter some of the Algarve’s most iconic and photographed landscapes. Take a moment at Ponta da Piedade, a breathtaking geological wonder with its sea stacks, arches, and grottoes sculpted by the ocean. Next, continue on to Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo, two of Portugal’s most beautiful beaches, where crystal-clear waters meet secluded coves framed by towering cliffs. These beaches are accessed via long wooden staircases, offering stunning views as you descend. Your epic trek ends in Lagos, a lively town and the gateway to the Algarve, known for its beautiful beaches and vibrant atmosphere. In the quieter months, though, the town still retains its authentic charm. To celebrate the end of your adventure, gather with your fellow hikers for a farewell dinner in the heart of town – a perfect chance to share stories and reflect on the memories you’ve made along the way.
Day 7
Time to chill...
Your adventure concludes after breakfast, and you're free to depart at any time. If you're flying out from Faro, convenient buses and trains run frequently from town and connect directly to the airport or Faro city centre. If you're not quite ready to leave Portugal yet, consider extending your stay with a few extra days in Lagos or other popular towns in the Algarve. After all the miles you've covered on foot, you've certainly earned some well-deserved time to relax, soak up the sun, and enjoy the beautiful beaches!

What is the food like?
The cuisine along the Rota Vicentina is based on fresh, locally sourced ingredients, especially seafood and traditional meat dishes, olive oil and fragrant bread, reflecting the culinary heritage of the Algarve and Alentejo regions. Enjoying these local specialties amidst stunning landscapes is without doubt one of the trip's highlights. Breakfasts typically include a selection of bread, cereal, yoghurt, fruit, cheese, and cured meats to fuel your hikes. For lunch, your host will arrange picnic meals, including sandwiches, local pastries and fruit, to ensure you can make the most of your time along the trails. However, there are also plenty of cafes along the way for extra snacks and drinks, should you want them. The first two dinners are included, while the other evenings are free for you to explore the local cuisine like grilled sardines, octopus, and fish stews. In Sagres and Lagos, you’ll find a variety of international and Mediterranean dining options; whilst in the more rural areas you're likely to find cosy traditional eateries. Your guide will help to recommend and can pre-arrange your evening meals if you wish to dine as a group. Of course, no visit to Portugal is complete without trying the famous pastéis de nata custard tarts!
Vegetarians, vegans and other dietary requirements and allergies can be catered for although options in some restaurants may be more limited – please just request this on your passenger info form.
What is the accommodation like?
Vale da Telha, Aljezur
You'll spend the first night of the trip at Utopia Guesthouse, located in the residential area of Vale da Telha near Aljezur. It's approximately 3km from Arrifana Beach, the start point of your trek. This boutique accommodation features charming decor, with stone and wood details. The property also has two outdoor swimming pools, a large garden and two communal living rooms. You'll stay in comfortable twin-share rooms with private bathrooms.
Aldeia da Pedralva
On the second night of the trip you'll stay in a unique location in Aldeia da Pedralva, where a rural tourism project has helped restore and revitalise what was once a ruined, abandoned village. The initiative, led by local António Ferreira and a group of entrepreneurs, transformed the nearly deserted village into a sustainable tourism destination, preserving its traditional charm. The old houses were restored using eco-friendly methods, blending rustic architecture with modern comforts, and the project involved local artisans and former residents to maintain cultural authenticity. By reviving Aldeia da Pedralva, the project successfully addressed rural depopulation while fostering eco-conscious tourism and creating a model for sustainable rural development. You'll spend the night in different small country homes, decorated with elegant, traditional furniture. It's possible you'll share a small house with other people in your group, and you'll be accommodated in twin-share rooms with a shared bathroom. The small houses comprise either one, two, or three bedrooms, and some also have a terrace and outdoor space.
Vila do Bispo
In Vila do Bispo you'll stay one night at Mira Sagres Hotel, a simple but characterful property offering a blend of modern comfort and traditional design. The hotel provides well-equipped, twin-share rooms, a wellness centre with an indoor pool and sauna, and a peaceful atmosphere. You'll be within walking distance of the town’s historic centre and nearby restaurants.
Sagres
In Sagres you'll stay one night at Memmo Baleeira Hotel, a stylish boutique hotel offering modern luxury with a laid-back atmosphere. In a prime location, it provides stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and Sagres Bay. The property features contemporary twin-share rooms with minimalist design, some with private balconies overlooking the sea. Guests can enjoy a range of amenities, including an outdoor pool, spa, and a fitness centre. The beaches and the town's historic centre are just a few steps away.
Salema
One night of the trip will be spent at Salema Eco Camp, a nature-focused camping and glamping site located near the village of Salema in the Algarve. Set in a serene, wooded area, it offers a range of accommodations, including eco-friendly bungalows, glamping tents, and lodges which blend with the natural environment. The camp embraces sustainability, using solar energy and promoting eco-conscious practices throughout the site. Amenities include an on-site restaurant serving organic, locally sourced food and pizzas. Subject to availability and depending on the size and make-up of your group, you'll be accommodated either in cosy glamping tents (with a bed, outdoor furniture, electricity and a mini-bar) or in eco-lodges (authentic wooden houses, with two rooms, a kitchen, a wonderful terrace and a bathroom shared by both rooms). If you stay in one of the glamping tents, please note these do not have private bathrooms, but you'll have full access to the common facilities located a few metres away.
Lagos
On you final night of the trip, you'll stay at the modern Hotel Vila Galé, a contemporary beachfront hotel with direct access to Meia Praia beach in Lagos. The resort has spacious rooms with stylish, maritime-inspired décor, many of which have balconies with views of the sea or the hotel's large swimming pool. The property offers a wide range of amenities, including a spa with a sauna and indoor pool, and a well-equipped fitness centre.
Upgrades
For solo travellers looking for their own space, an optional private room can be booked for an extra charge, see Optional Extras for the price. Please request this at the time of booking (this is subject to availability).
This trip has been rated as Moderate
This trek requires a good level of fitness, although no previous experience is necessary. Each daily hiking stage ranges from 15km to 24km, and although the cumulative elevation gain and loss is not challenging in isolation (up/down 450m maximum), you must have the stamina to hike for around five hours each day, excluding breaks. Overall, most sections can be tackled by beginner and intermediate hikers, but please note that some areas do present challenges due to their rugged nature, sandy paths or some steep ascents and descents along cliffside paths. The hikes on Day 2 and Day 5 involve some longer days with some steady climbs which will make the going quite challenging in parts, but the views along the way make the journey more than worthwhile.
What if i need to skip an activity?
Each day will involve a point to point hike. If for any reason you cannot continue the trail, there are regular exit points, and your guide can arrange a taxi to your next hotel if required.
What will I need to carry?
Your larger overnight bag will be transported between the hotels for you by vehicle, so you'll only need a small rucksack to carry personal items, water and your picnic lunch during each day of hiking.
The southwest of Portugal has a Mediterranean climate influenced by the Atlantic, ensuring mild temperatures year-round. The trip is planned for spring (late March to early June) and autumn (September to November) when conditions are ideal for hiking, avoiding the summer heat. In spring, temperatures range from 15°C to 20°C, and although there may be more rain, it’s perhaps the best season for scenery, with stunning wildflowers in bloom and lush greenery. Early June and late September offer warmer days in the mid-20s°C with long, sunny hours and little rain, perfect for hiking. October and November bring cooler temperatures, but they still remain excellent months for hiking and swimming.
We’re still waiting to collect any reviews from other travellers on this trip. However, all our hosts go through an extensive vetting process to ensure that your adventure is awesome.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 141kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000miles/1609km would be approx. 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person if there was 2 of you in it).
- A return economy class flight London - New York would be approx. 1,619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approx. 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
Overall, weather conditions along the Rota Vicentina should be pretty favourable in the months when this trip is scheduled to run, with plenty of sunshine and mild temperatures ranging from 18-27°C on average. However, as always, Mother Nature is unpredictable so the best you can do is to be prepared for anything and come equipped with sunscreen, a hat and waterproofs. Your host will be monitoring the weather conditions during the course of the trip and may suggest alternative, safer routes or activities should the weather get particularly bad, or change the order and timings of the hikes. Occasionally, subject to tides and sea conditions, it may be not possible to access all beaches or swim for safety reasons.
You'll be led by one experienced local hiking guide and you'll have a driver taking care of the luggage transfers between the hotels.
You'll have access to your main larger bag with for all your belongings every day, as this will be transported for you by vehicle between each accommodation. You'll only need a small daysack to carry personal items during each day of hiking.
The local tap water is safe to drink. Please bring along your own reusable water bottle to fill up at the hotels, public fountains and at restaurants to avoid buying single use plastic bottles.
