Follow your local guide through wild jungle trails on the lookout for some of the many species of birds, orchids and playful spider monkeys, then cool down with swims and canoe paddles in refreshing cenotes. This evening, enjoy the unique opportunity to meet Ocho, a local spiritual leader who lives in harmony with nature and is a true expert on Mayan culture. Take a mud bath here before moving on to the nearby community and salt lakes of Las Coloradas, where you'll learn about the process of making salt and hopefully get a glimpse of the peculiar pink lakes. By late afternoon you'll reach your final destination of the trip: Playa El Cuyo, a stunning stretch of white sand lapped by sparkling turquoise waters, immaculately quiet and a world away from the touristy, crowded beaches of the Riviera Maya.

Transfers

Your host will provide one set arrival transfer for those arriving into Cancun International Airport on Day 1. The time of the group transfer will typically be 17:30 and your host will confirm this with you pre-departure. On some trip dates, this group transfer time may be altered slightly to enable the best fit with changeable international flight schedules and to try to accommodate as many people as possible. The transfer takes you to the start hotel in Tulum.

Note: For April and May 2025 trips, the pickup time will be a bit later, at 18:45 to enable arrivals on the direct BA flight from London.

If you arrive on an earlier flight on Day 1, you have the option of either waiting for the set group transfer, or alternatively making your own way to Tulum (either by private transfer – see Optional Extras for prices – or by the public bus which provides a regular connection between Cancun terminal and Tulum centre).

At the end of the adventure on Day 8, your host will transfer you back to Cancun International Airport, usually by 14:30 – so please don't book a return flight departing earlier than 16:30.

What is the food like?

Cochinita pibil tacos, Mexico

Mayan and colonial influences shape the Yucatan's mouthwatering cuisine, with staples such as chillies, cheese, corn tortillas, eggs, and beans found in many dishes. Although most people probably associate Mexican food with dishes like tacos, fajitas, and enchiladas, there is a lot more to this country’s incredible gastronomy – you'll find the Yucatan region to be a proper foodie paradise. You'll taste many authentic dishes prepared by the Mayan communities you will visit, and you'll also get to try some great local restaurants recommended by your knowledgable guide. Margaritas and mezcal are on the menu for those who wish, of course!

Vegetarians, vegans and other dietary requirements and allergies can be catered for – please just request this on your passenger info form.

What is the accommodation like?

Uolin Nah Hotel, Tulum
Tulum

Spend your first three nights of the trip at the comfortable Hotel Uolis Nah Tulum, a small characterful hotel in downtown Tulum, with a swimming pool and a lush garden. Accommodation is in ensuite, twin-share rooms equipped with flat-screen TVs, a minibar fridge, a balcony and a terrace.

A camp in the jungle, Yucatan, Mexico
Jungle camping

For one night of the trip, you'll have a unique experience immersing yourself in authentic Mayan culture and truly connecting with nature. You'll be hosted by Ocho, who runs the Tree of Life Wakanchan project in the Mayan community of Tres Reyes, near the town of Nuevo Durango. You'll be sleeping in twin-share tents surrounded by lush green jungle, a sacred space which is part of the Mayan's original ceremonial centre. You will be able to use toilet facilities and showers at Ocho's house, and at night you'll gather around the campfire to learn about ancient Mayan traditions, astrology and ceremonies. All your camping equipment (including tents and sleeping bags) will be provided by your host.

Casa Quetzal, Valladolid, Mexico
Valladolid

You'll spend one night in Valladolid, usually at the comfortable boutique hotel Casa Quetzal, ideally located in the historical centre of the town and surrounded by tropical gardens for a peaceful setting. The property has an outdoor pool and a spa service. Accommodation is in nicely decorated, ensuite rooms on a twin-share basis.

Cucu Hotel, El Cuyo, Mexico
El Cuyo Beach

On the final two nights of the trip, you'll usually stay a the comfortable Cucu Hotel, a recently renovated boutique property located by El Cuyo beach. You'll stay in stylish air-conditioned rooms on a twin-share basis, with free WiFi. All units come with a terrace with pool views and a private bathroom with shower.

Upgrades

For solo travellers looking for their own space, an optional private room and tent can be booked for an extra charge, see Optional Extras for the price and request this at the time of booking. Please note that due to the limited size of some of the properties used, availability is restricted.

This trip has been rated as Easy

A reasonable level of general fitness and a sense of adventure is required. None of the activities are particularly strenuous, but expect some busy days with a mix of hiking, kayaking, swimming, snorkelling and sightseeing at different points across the itinerary. No prior experience is needed for any of the activities, but you must be able to swim and be comfortable in the water as well as on a bike (in Coba, you can choose to walk instead of cycling if preferred). You'll spend plenty of time at archaeological sites, in the jungle and among tropical foliage, so although you won't be at high altitude or on difficult terrain, the heat and humidity may make the days more tiring than expected. The swimming at various cenotes will be easy and you can choose to be as active as you wish in many spots. There will be some early starts to beat the heat and the crowds, but you'll also have some opportunities to have a lie-in or to relax at the comfortable hotels, by the pool or at the beach.

What will I need to carry?

You'll need to have a larger bag suitable for all your belongings which will be transported for you, and then a small daysack to carry personal items during each day of hiking.

Although the Yucatan Peninsula’s is a year-round destination, the best time to visit is from start of November to May, when the weather tends to be drier, cooler and less humid. This is when this trip is scheduled to operate, avoiding the heavier showers of the tropical rainy season, which usually lasts from June to October.

Between November and May, you'll enjoy plenty of sunshine with daytime temperatures generally reaching between 26°C (79°F) to 33°C (91°F), and down to between 17°C (62°F) and 22°C (72°F) at night. However, it’s important to stress that the weather can be anything but predictable and rain showers are possible also during the dry season – so the best thing is to come prepared for all conditions.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 382kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000miles/1609km would be approx. 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person if there was 2 of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight London - New York would be approx. 1,619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approx. 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

Marta Marinelli, raised in Italy’s serene Prosecco Hills, dreamt of global adventures, inspired by her father's travel stories. Her passion evolved into a career, backed by a decade of studies including degrees in international tourism and destination management. She’s worked in the adventure travel sector since 2012, living in Italy, the UK, and now sunny Portugal.

Over twenty years, Marta has explored over 55 countries, visiting remote areas like Ghana, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Haiti and Nepal’s Upper Mustang region. As a Senior Adventure Expansion Manager at Much Better Adventures, she focuses on creating life-changing experiences, ranging from multi-activity adventures, challenging treks to ultimate adventures in iconic places. She loves the challenge of finding the best local adventure hosts around the world, collaborating on adventures that offer genuine immersion, pushing beyond the beaten path and working on exclusive itineraries that challenge your comfort zone.

What makes her tick? Enabling people to live adventure-rich lives while positively impacting and empowering local communities around the world, generating sustainable opportunities for both the host, guides, community, and the environment.

The itinerary has been designed to escape the crowds, choosing lesser known (but equally stunning) heritage sites and Mayan temples, which offer a far more intimate experience than places like Chichén Itzá. Your host has also hand picked some hidden cenotes and secluded jungle settings, which normally don't attract large number of visitors. Whilst it's likely you'll find places like Tulum downtown or the Tulum ruins a bit busier, your guide will schedule the activities in order to avoid the crowds as much as possible, and you'll often just be immersed in wild nature. The beach at the end of the trip has been selected as it's rarely visited by tourists, and is a real contrast to the busy, built-up Riviera Maya.

You'll meet various members of different Mayan communities during the trip – which is a fantastic opportunity to learn about local culture, history, and their adaptation to contemporary life. Your local host has been at the forefront of responsible tourism in the region. Their core values of respect, conservation and education have led them to create lasting bonds with the many people and groups who share an interest in protecting the local environment and in the promotion of culture and conservation. They work alongside local families, communities, small businesses, associations and an awesome group of guides; all of whom uphold the same values and make a positive impact in their everyday lives through their example and hard work. This trip has been designed to allow you to experience the authentic side of the Yucatan away from the overcrowded beach resorts – be it in secret cenotes, in the middle of the jungle, or amongst little-known ancient temples.

On the trip you'll spend an evening with Ocho, a spiritual leader who grew up in Mexico. Since he was little he has felt a call to nature, and he left the city to reconnect with his ancestors and Mother Earth. In 2005, he became a guide in the Yucatan region, and created a friendly relationship with the local community of Nuevo Durango. He began to teach classes about Mayan culture, their language, their plants, their animals, cosmology, astronomy, natural medicine, dance, music and silence. His goal is to share all this knowledge to open awareness and perception. Today, he lives in harmony with nature and his path is to depend less on the system. You'll camp near his house, surrounded by jungle, and join him in a special Mayan energy-cleansing ceremony.

On request, your group can choose to arrange a longer traditional Temazcal ceremony, an ancestral shamanic ritual practised by ancient civilisations throughout Central and North America (including the Maya, Aztecs and Toltecs). The ceremony's purpose is therapeutic healing to relieve stress, aches and injuries, skin or respiratory disease. It is often compared to other sweat lodge activities such as a hammam, a sauna and hot water baths. This is guided by a Temazcalero, who accompanies you throughout the experience. Your guide will be able to provide you with further information locally, if you are interested in this option.

Tips are not included in the trip cost. These are entirely at your discretion, but there is an expectation to tip for good service. Your guide will help with advice, however we suggest the below as a guideline per person:

USD $40 per person for the main guide USD $25 per person for your local guides (your leader will collect this in the form of a kitty and distribute it among the various local guides and communities who provide their services during the trip) USD $15 per person for the driver

Of course, you are free to tip more or less, and the amount should be reflective of your perception of service and quality – a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.

Tap water in Mexico is not safe to drink. Water bottles with inbuilt filters are becoming increasingly popular for travellers to use in countries without clean tap water. Please see our guide for advice on the best water filters for adventurers if you wish to bring your own filtration bottle on this trip.

Your main luggage will be stored securely on the bus when you're on the move and you'll have access to it on a daily basis. During the activities, you'll only need to carry a personal day rucksack with your essential items.

If it’s just a case of drizzling rain you can wear a rain jacket and carry on, although occasionally you may have to wait for it to stop and seek shelter along the route. In case of adverse conditions, your guide may choose to alter the duration or order of your activities with your safety in mind.

This trip visits locations where daytime temperatures can be extremely high during the times of year when this trip operates. High humidity and limited access to shade can also be factors, and warm temperatures can continue into the nighttime, which additionally influence the body’s ability to cool down. Personal care should be taken to keep cool as best possible in the conditions, such as wearing appropriate clothing and proper hydration. Very high temperatures can impair an individual’s physical abilities to perform an activity that they may otherwise be able to do competently at cooler temperatures. People may experience symptoms associated with dehydration and Heat Stroke. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with high temperatures, by carefully managing the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided.
